欧洲杯足球赛正如火如荼地进行。话说，不是冤家不碰头，英格兰和苏格兰偏偏分到了一组。据报道，上万的苏格兰球迷来到温布利球场，有大闹英格兰主场的意思。不过，那场球一点也不好看，本来在索斯盖特的改造下，已经有了些“技术流”的英格兰却在苏格兰的围堵之下，又被逼出了长传冲吊的原形，一场被解说员说成是sloppy的比赛，最终以0：0的比分收场。
《金融时报》的评论员Gideon Rachman也前往球场观看，离比赛时间尚早，他想去酒吧喝一杯，但被保安警告说Be careful which pubs you go into,” she says. “They’ll see you coming. ”在足球比赛赛前、赛后和赛中，你的装束标明了你是哪个队的拥趸，要是不小心走到对方球迷云集的酒吧，那麻烦可就大了。
本届欧锦赛延期到今年举行，但欧足联在赛事的名称上坚持用Euro 2020，似乎有身在2021仍旧假装2020还没有离去的意思。
欧锦赛全称是欧洲国家杯，它从来就不仅仅是足球比赛，而是欧洲各国民族主义的宣泄场；民族主义从来不会消失，战争过于血腥和残酷，足球成了文明国家新的战场。但对于足球而言，似乎又被赋予了太多的内容。苏格兰正在酝酿再次独立公投，这个节骨眼上和老对手也是老伙伴的英格兰来一场大战，其意义可想而知。For Scotland, the pressing issue is independence. For England, it is race.
当今的足球比赛，从来就不能置身于世界热点之外。今次的欧锦赛，每场比赛之前，都会有个官方要求的仪式，那就是双方队员单膝下跪(take the knee)，向受到种族歧视的人们的致敬。不过，不是每个球迷都吃这套，每当这个动作做出之后，都会受到一些球迷的嘘声。在英格兰，这样的嘘声还不小，甚至让首相约翰逊都介入了。The English football team has decided to “take the knee” before matches, as a protest against racism. But each time they do it, they are booed by a significant section of their own supporters. It has become accepted wisdom in Britain that “culture wars” always work better for the right than the left. But football may be an exception. A poll taken across Europe before Euro 2020 showed 54 per cent of English football fans supported taking the knee, with 39 per cent oppose.
不仅仅在英国，在匈牙利的主场布达佩斯，球迷的嘘声也很大，他们说，匈牙利人认为这个动作带有挑衅的味道Hungarians see the gesture as a “provocation”.
正是在这样的氛围中，想与政治撇清关系的足球，总也撇不清，反而成了制造分裂的一股力量。Football used to be an apolitical space — but now the national team has become a source of division.
不过，作者也提醒读者，所谓“无关政治”，从来就是虚妄。在70年代的足球场，向黑人球员发出嘘声以及学猴子叫是家常便饭的事情，而当时的足协官员以及解说员对此都不置一词。Football grounds in the 1970s were also where I saw the most overt racism that I’ve ever witnessed in Britain. It was routine to see black players barracked by boos and monkey noises. The football authorities and commentators were silent about this for many years.
目光重回英格兰和苏格兰。在1974年，苏格兰迎战巴西，当时赛场上演奏的是英国*歌国**God Save the Queen (上帝保佑女王)，而今天，苏格兰球员和球迷在开球前放声高唱的是 Flower of Scotland（苏格兰之花），其中的主题句是“We can still rise now/And be the nation again”（我们仍将再起，再次成为一个国家）。不知道英格兰人听来是怎样的一个滋味。
在文章的最后，作者也感觉到本届比赛对于英格兰和苏格兰来说，其实机会都不大。他认为这是最古怪的一届欧锦赛：在疫情期间举行，大部分球场仅有1/4的上座率，英格兰队的表现差强人意。不过，他仍旧以英国人固有的幽默期待一个最古怪的结果，那就是英格兰人的最终胜利。On the other hand, this is a weird tournament. It’s taking place in the middle of a pandemic; the stadiums are a quarter full and England are playing half decently. I am allowing myself to hope for the weirdest outcome of the lot — an England victory.
我猜他想说的是，要是英格兰一直赢下去，单膝下跪就可能变成长跪不起。
