上周，诺丁汉大学名誉文学博士、宁诺顾问委员会成员、奥运冠军邓亚萍入选英国大学体育名人堂（British Universities & Colleges Sport Hall of Fame）。
英国大学体育名人堂是英国高等教育（Higher Education）为表彰在体育方面做出突出贡献的学生、教职人员和志愿者而设立的。
邓亚萍是世界最杰出的运动员之一，曾获得18个世界冠军、连续2届4次奥运会冠军。这位传奇的运动员在16岁就夺得了乒乓球世界女子双打冠军，曾连续八年称霸世界乒坛。
退役后，邓亚萍攻读并获得了诺丁汉大学硕士学位，并随后在宁诺被授予名誉文学博士学位。
2013年，英国诺丁汉大学宣布设立“邓亚萍体育奖学金”，向校友邓亚萍致敬，希望她的巨大成就激励所有后来人。
“邓亚萍体育奖学金”致力于资助中国优秀运动人才完成诺丁汉大学的学业，分为硕士奖学金、海外学习奖学金、本科奖学金三类。学习期间，运动员还可以免费使用所有诺丁汉大学的运动设施，进行免费物理治疗、体能训练等。
邓亚萍博士一直非常愿意帮助年轻体育人才应对生活中的挑战，帮助运动员在退役之后转型。
2016年，在“邓亚萍体育奖学金”的资助下，2012年伦敦残奥会乒乓球（TT8级）男单冠军赵帅和亚洲残疾人乒乓球锦标赛(TT10级)团体冠军、2014世界残疾人锦标赛男单季军孔维杰来到宁诺学习。不久后，赵帅在里约残奥会乒乓球男子单打比赛中成功卫冕。

邓亚萍博士曾在接受采访时说，在诺丁汉大学的经历是她最难忘的记忆之一。她也会特意回到宁诺校园，和校领导探讨体育公益事业、帮助运动员接受高等教育等方面的话题。2018年，她作为宁诺顾问委员会的一员，参加了宁诺第一届第三次顾问委员会会议，为学校的发展建言献策。

Dr Deng Yaping inducted into the British University and College Sport (BUCS) Hall of Fame
University of Nottingham Alum, Dr Deng Yaping has been inducted into the BUCS Hall of Fame at the BUCS Awards ceremony in Bristol, U.K. The eighteen-time world table tennis champion and four-time Olympic gold medallist, was awarded the honour in recognition of her outstanding achievements in sport and education.
The Chinese phenomenon, is widely considered as the greatest female player in table-tennis history and was incudcted into the UoN Sport Hall of Fame in May 2017.
Dreaming of being a World Champion from an early age, Yaping’s breakthrough came in 1989 when aged just 16 years old she captured the World Women’s Doubles title in Dortmund, Germany. Dominating the sport for the next eight years, her four Olympic titles came from gold in the singles and doubles in Barcelona 1992 followed by retaining both titles in Atlanta 1996.
After her retirement in 1997, Deng was voted the Chinese Sports Personality of the Century and received an honorary doctorate at UNNC. The University of Nottingham, in common with other British universities, is empowered to give honorary degrees – the highest honour a university can bestow - to people of distinction.
Her legacy continues at the University of Nottingham, through the Deng Yaping Scholarship programme for talented table-tennis players from China giving them the opportunity to study and compete in the U.K in higher education, whilst developing their future career prospects through volunteering support.
Zhao Shuai, Haoyu Liu and Weijie Kong are the first three scholars all combining studies at the University with intensive table tennis training. During Zhao Shuai’s study at UNNC, he won the Table Tennis Gold Medal at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.
