In many nations, criminal proceedings are brought into the public domain via television. This essay shall explore whether the benefits of such action are greater than the negatives; however, despite the perceived drawbacks, it seems the advantages of airing live criminal trials supersede that of the negatives.
One of the often-conjectured negatives of airing criminal trials live is the possibility of incurring undue influence on the trial itself. Caused by the presence of TV cameras in the courtroom, this can impact the behavior of the defendant as the suspect is aware that the proceedings are being aired live to a TV audience, and so the temptation to sensationalize their own trial may be too much to resist. Particularly with psychotic or deranged individuals, this may result in performing for the audience, the implication of which could result in mesmerizing some members of the audience, who, as with fans idolizing a superstar, may sympathize with the defendant, and thus, turn a psychotic criminal into a celebrity.
Conversely, allowing for public transparency of courtroom proceedings can have the effect of ensuring officials have greater culpability for their actions as all will be under the spotlight in a live television airing. This fact alone makes live broadcasts of the legal process a significant tool for the public in some countries to maintain a form of public accountability. Likewise, as trials aired live tend to capture the public’s interest, televised trials can open a window to the uglier side of their respective societies, granting all to see the myriad problems that cause illegal behavior of those being charged with crimes. Allowing the public to view trials live on television can subsequently offer society some semblance of pellucidity into law and crime.
In conclusion, though TV trials can sensationalize a defendant’s criminal behavior and have a behavioral impact on some members of the audience, in my opinion, transparency into the legal system is beneficial for the whole of society as it helps maintain a level of honesty within the system, and as such, the advantages of televised court cases outweigh the negatives.
