The NBA Welcomes Four Teams; 'Blazermania’ Is Born

The 1976-77 season was a time of change in pro basketball. Four teams from the disbanded ABA -- the New York Nets, Indiana Pacers, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs – join the NBA. In the Playoffs, Portland beat Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles to reach The Finals, where they faced the heavily favored Philadelphia 76ers and All-Star Julius Erving. Philadephia won the first two games at home but the Blazers stormed back. Behind All-Star center Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas, Lionel Hollins and Bobby Gross, Portland won four straight, spawning new basketball terms “Blazermania” and “Rip City”.

The 1977-78 season featured two of the league's most spectacular stars in a duel for the scoring crown that came down to the final day of the season. After David Thompson scored 73 points, George Gervin scored 63. Gervin edged Thompson with a scoring average of 27.22. Thompson finished with 27.15. It was the closest scoring race in NBA history.
