根据U.S.News统计近两千所大学，2018-19年的学费平均上涨了3%。737所私立大学中，超过100所显示本学年学费在50,000美元以上。
私立大学2018-19年学费平均35,676美元，公立大学的本州学生学费平均为9,716美元，公立大学的州外学生为21,629美元。
2018-2019学年，纽约的哥伦比亚大学学费高达59,430美元，是私立学校中收费最高的，这样算下来一年学费超过人民币40万。在过去的两年里，纽约常春藤盟校的学费上涨了近8%。与哥伦比亚类似，芝加哥大学自2016-2017学年以来将学费提高了近9%。在10所最贵的私立学校中，平均学费几乎为56,900美元。
另一方面，2018-2019年间最便宜的10所私立大学的学费平均略高于1.1万美元。但与去年相比，最便宜的学校的平均价格确实上涨了4%以上。
