The shadow of a bow is mistaken as a snake in one's cup

Hello everyone, this is UK Hebei we radio idiom talk show .I am Justin Levender..the name of the story I will tell you today is: The shadow of a bow is mistaken as a snake in one's cup.

There was a man named Le Guang in the Jin Dynasty who liked to make friends very much and often invited friends to drink and chat at home. One day, Le Guang made a good dish to invite guests. He was very happy in the living room while drinking with his friends and playing games.

A guest was toasting and drinking, and accidentally saw a small snake swimming in the cup, but due to the presence of many guests, he had to drink the wine in order to maintain etiquette. Later, the guest left without explaining why. This made Le Guang feel very puzzled: Why did he leave without drinking?

After several days, Le Guang had not seen this friend. Le Guang missed him very much, so he went to visit him. Unexpectedly, this friend had been sick for several days and was still very unwell. Le Guang asked strangely: "When you drank a few days ago, you were fine. Why did you become so sick at once?"

At first this friend hesitated and said nothing. Later, under Le Guang's questioning, this friend told him the truth: “You treated me kindly that day and everyone was very happy. After a few drinks, I suddenly found a snake in the wine glass, and it was slowly wriggling. I was very scared and disgusted. But your kindness was difficult, so I barely drank the glass of wine and left.

After returning home, I felt uncomfortable all over, and I always felt a little snake in my belly. In this way, I couldn't escape it.

After Le Guang learned of his condition, he remembered that there was a bow hanging on the wall of his home. He guessed that the snake mentioned by the friend must be the shadow of the bow reflected in the wine glass, so he invited the guest to the home again. Le Guang invited a friend to drink. As soon as the man raised the glass, the shadow of the bow on the wall was reflected in the glass again, like a swimming snake, he was stunned.

At this time, Le Guang pointed to the bow hanging on the wall and said: "It's all doing a strange thing. The snake in the cup is the shadow of this bow!" Then, Le Guang took the bow away from the wall, and the little snake in the cup disappeared. This friend suddenly realized that he happily said, "Oh, that's how it is, the snake in the cup turned out to be the shadow of the bow on the wall!" This friend of his was relieved of his suspicions, and the stone on his heart was removed. The friend's illness also healed.

The original meaning of this idiom was to mistake the bow shadow reflected in the wine glass for a snake, and later the meaning became: fear caused by suspicion.
