People’s views vary on the issue of whether tobacco should be banned or not. Some people would argue that smoking is a personal choice. However, I personally believe that tobacco should be made illegal . There are two reasons for this.

Firstly, tobacco is a drug. Most countries around the world take a prohibitionist approach to the problem of drug abuse. If governments wish to be consistent in pursuing their “war on drugs”, therefore, I believe they must ban tobacco as well.

Although pro-smoking group would no doubt argue that people have the right to determine what goes into their bodies, I would suggest the rights of society at large must override those of the individual. The medical treatment smokers need is often incredibly costly, and it is usually governments and society that pay the bill. Hence, I feel that anti-smoking law would be entirely justified.
