Playing football was not allowed in our school, a depressing thing for my classmates and I, many of whom were avid football fans. However, as our campus was located adjacent to the wall of the Imperial palace and on one of the busiest streets in Beijing, we are confined to a relatively small area. Later, though, the school moved to a new area nearby, complete with a rectangular yard, and suddenly my friends and I dared to hope. Sadly for us, the space was designated for use only by second-graders. There was plenty of space for both their activities and for football, so we ignored the rule, and plotted quiet rebellion. Somebody brought a ball and we started playing during class breaks. Not long after we got started, however, our head teacher just appeared, as if from thin air, and grabbed our football without a word of explanation. We followed him and explained our position both passionately and logically, but he only responded with only a single monotonous sentence:“It is the school regulation that football is not allowed.” .
My friends and I were upset because the outdated school regulation ignored that there was plainly enough space for everyone to use the area safely. Perhaps worse, it seemed there was nothing we could to change the situation. After some time, I decided to start a petition. I mentioned all the logical, moral
and emotional reasons I could think of, such as how physical exercise has been shown to improve children’s academic performance and social development while reducing their stress levels. At first, I sought the support of fellow football fans. Then, I asked players from different classes to make speeches to garner wider outside support. Our excitement rose as more pages filled with names and eventually the majority of students had signed the petition.
Next, petition in hand, I entered the dean’s office. The dean examined our reasons and the number of names we had collected, and approved our petition. I extended our deepest and most respectful gratitude, and as I left his office, I took I took a deep breath of freedom and happiness. I strode toward the yard where my friends were waiting for me, and as we embraced each other in celebration, I remember wishing the moment would never end.
Unfortunately, the good times were not to last. We soon found, though that the grounds were paved unevenly, which led to several minor injuries and to many students feeling the area was unsafe. I took it upon myself to seek bids to re-pave the athletic yard, and the cheapest was approximately RMB 45000 (about $7000) to get the money, we needed school approval and this meant another petition. Even if the other students supported it, though, I knew this motion was far more controversial than the last, since it involved significant up-front cost.
Despite the obvious challenge, I still thought that if our petition represented the students’ needs and provided sufficient reasons why the benefits outweighed the costs, the president would consider it. I included legal reasons relating to national standards and the general reputation of the school as well as those listed before. Finally, I attached a simulated diagram and construction plan. This time, I had almost all the students’ signatures and even several teachers’ as well.
Petition in hand, I gathered myself and knocked on the principal’s office door once again. As the principal carefully read the petition, the moment seemed to last forever. He told me that he had to reject the petition due to the cost but that my petition had convinced him to build a seven-a-side football field as part of the upcoming campus repair. I was thrilled at the compromise, and as we looked out the window imagined my friends and I playing football on the lush green grass of the courtyard below.
