Seeing in 3D, is not the same as seeing in depth. The best description of the benefits of stereopsis that I have ever read is in the book Fixing my Gaze by Dr. Susan Barry (aka “Stereo Sue”). It is a must-read book for anyone interested in treating strabismus and developing good binocular stereoscopic vision.

Susan Barry

Dr. Barry is a neurobiologist specializing in the neuroplasticity of the brain. As a child Dr. Barry was operated on three times for strabismus (crossed eyes). The first time was at age 2, and then again at ages 3 and 7. After the surgeries, Dr Barry discovered that, although her eyes looked approximately straight, she had only a limited ability to judge depth and had no stereopsis. This made her much more insecure in all of her spatial judgments, especially when driving. Dr. Barry’s amazing book describes how she developed stereopsis for the first time in her life at the age of 48, after undergoing an optometric vision therapy program with, Dr. Theresa Ruggiero, a behavioral optometrist from Massachusetts. In the book, Dr. Barry describes in a uniquely personal and poetic way, exactly what seeing in stereo is like.

[Her] words remind me of a wonderful sight I experienced one late winter day in the early stages of gaining stereopsis. I rushed out of the classroom building to grab a quick lunch, and I was startled by my view of falling snow. The large wet flakes were floating about me in a graceful, three-dimensional dance. In the past, snowflakes appeared to fall in one plane slightly in front of me. Now I felt myself in the midst of the snowfall, among all the snowflakes. Overcome with happiness, I forgot all about lunch and stood quite still, completely mesmerized by the enveloping snow.
