▲英语的破折号相当于冒号或分号，用以对前面的内容进行总结或说明，其后的句子通常要用小写。如：
1. Be careful —the pavements are very frosty. 当心——路面结了霜。
2. Come on —there’ll be time enough to chat later. 好了，以后有的是时间再聊。
3. I don't want to bother him —he has enough to worry about. 我不想麻烦他——他要担心的事够多的了。
4. Don’t ask questions —there’ll be time enough for that later. 现在不要提问——等会儿有足够的时间来问问题。
5. I can’t stop hiccupping —does anyone know a good cure? 我止不住地打嗝——有人知道有什么治它的好办法吗？
▲ 但若破折号后面的词不能小写时，则只能大写。如：
1. A lot of us want to leave now —Bill for example. 我们中有许多人想现在就走，例如比尔。
2. The Secretary of State’s trip included four Arab countries —Syria ,Lebanon,EgyptandSaudi Arabia. 国务卿出访了四个阿拉伯国家——叙利亚、黎马嫩、埃及和沙特阿拉伯。
