(Enlarge the mind, improve the understanding, polish the whole man)。

Miss Sugars' inspiring endeavour to Mars

The winner of the 2019 Alumni Laureate Award, Linzi Wang, took only five years to be a manager in Mars Wrigley Confectionary. Beyond her responsibility of ensuring food quality and safety, she proactively drives the development of material industries in terms of efficiency, innovation and sustainability.

Linzi has over three years of experience in dealing with sugar; responsible for selecting suppliers and measuring product quality. In 2016, she and her team members managed to optimise the supply chain management of white sugar, which helped to significantly reduce human resource input and cut costs for the company.

Linzi distinguished herself among the thousands of candidates in 2018, to become one of the 10 Mars Ambassadors who were posted to Ecuador in South America. Her visits to cocoa farms and the making of careful investigations of the local market, allowed her to identify a gradual shift of farmers' choices to more profitable crops in the face of drought, pests and rising costs of cocoa; "I can't imagine that generations after us cannot enjoy silky chocolates", she stressed.

"I spent a lot of time communicating with local farmers. They are smart and eager to learn about Chinese techniques and experience in crop growing and farm management. I shared my experience in large-scale standardised management of farms and learned much from them as well". Through tight communication and experience sharing, Linzi helped them to improve farm management and increase profits of cocoa planting.

By familiarising herself with the various roles of the business, Linzi gained a "holistic perspective in problem solving". Her active participation in the entrepreneurial project of the company, inputting her observations and thoughts into a written report allowed two of the suggestions to be adopted. "I have always been thinking - what else should businessmen consider? Besides profits by sole commercial values, I think factors like environment, biodiversity, and what enterprises and individuals obtain from and wish to give back to society also matter."

"I think as long as one has the ability to learn and is willing to pay efforts, professional backgrounds will not be the obstacle in one's personal career development," Linzi said. "I had my first passport while in college, and gradually had it filled up. Thanks, UNNC for opening a broader world for me, as well as teaching me innovation and entrepreneurship. "
