Honest Abe
In 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky.
As a child, he had only one year of schooling. Books were very rare and so was paper. He had to write out his math problems on a wooden board using a knife!
Sometimes, he would have to walk for miles just to borrow a book. But he loved to learn.
Over time, he got the name "Honest Abe". Once, while working in a store, he did not give a woman the right change. He followed her home so he could give her the six cents back.
By the time he was seventeen, he knew he wanted to be a lawyer. Every day, he would walk 17 miles to the courthouse to watch the lawyers.
He borrowed books and read them by the light of the fireplace. His hard work paid off.
In 1861, he became president of the United States. Many people thought slavery was a good idea, but Lincoln did not.
Today, he is most known for freeing all the slaves.
