Chinese background

(Advanced my learning about management in education)

Language, computer and business training schools are now scattering at many cities in China. It sounds that China is experiencing a kind of boom in education. And this boom has already been lasted for more than 3 years.

Nearly all parents in China think that the young generation in their family needs to learn at least one foreign language for future practical use. Students work hard at high schools for the later degrees with popular majors so that they could be competitive in job market.

Serious inclining to “popular” majors such as “language”, “computer” and “finance” made the environment of education unhealthy. This reveals, in fact, immature attitude to education. Let’s think about what Education is in the original sense? How to equip our management group to meet the change?

Individually, I’ve found a fact that most western people receive happy education. They pick up subjects which they like. But most Chinese students are real degree seekers. Chinese students, usually before my generation, didn’t REALLY choose any majors to learn for themselves because their parents had decided what they should learn in the coming university years. It was a SAD thing. Many years past, I was aware of this, just like I woke up from an awful dream. But the situation does exist even nowadays.

However, the worst situation is that students don’t know what they desire to learn. That’s a real problem. Unfortunately, I want to say, most of Chinese students are facing this problem. Take myself as an example; many years ago, when my primary Chinese teacher asked me what I preferred to do in the future, I answered that I would like to be a doctor just like my father. But I didn’t realize that I knew less about what a doctor’s daily work was. Too much time, we are a book learner. And sometimes it’s hard for us to keep or develop what we are interested in when we are in teenagers. It’s related to several aspects such as Chinese universities’ unequal admission; family income; the whole domestic economy…I will indicate more on this in my later hand out.

I am happy to see that the whole thing has been improved better and better during recent years. And I’m still sure that our people should be benefited by effective educational management MORE DEEPLY. We need well-qualified management teams in schools to guide our students and their parents. Definitely, it will be a long process to reach an advanced education model.

The above reflection is from my first hand experience in training profession and personal growth in China, which made me concern about management in education very much. And I’m getting progress on this.
