冬天来了，南方的孩纸们，又到了一年一度妈妈让你穿秋裤(pull up your long johns)的季节了, 那么问题来了：秋裤英文怎么说吗？Long john又是什么鬼?
理论上(technically)，秋裤属于内衣underwear的一种(long johns fall into the category of underwater or undergarment)，但是跟我们平常理解的underwear又不太一样——大众理解的underwear一般指的是无袖内衣(sleeveless)或者短裤(shorts)。
而风靡我大中华的秋衣秋裤，都是长袖或者包腿长裤。如果用underwear似乎不太准确。到底哪个单词才是秋裤？
其实，对于成套的秋衣秋裤，英语里有用thermal underwear,还有一个比较久远的一个名字就long john。thermal underwear是功能上定义了，还比较好理解，但是long john是什么东东？
Long大家都容易理解，长款的么？但是这个 john 是什么鬼？似乎跟衣服半毛钱关系都没！但是人家就是用这个词了。
维基百科上对long john的定义是这样的：Long underwear, also called long johns or thermal underwear, is a style of two-piece underwear with long legs and long sleeves that is normally worn during cold weather.
所以long john就是秋衣秋裤的意思，如果要单指秋裤，可以说成long john pants/bottoms.不信的话，看看美国卖秋裤的商家们的用词：在亚马逊美国官网上输入long john，就出来了一堆秋裤图片了。而女性穿的保暖秋裤，则更青睐用thermal leggings这个词。
话题回到这个john到底是怎么和秋裤联系上的？据维基百科，2004年，英国词源学家Michael Quinion就long john的来源特意发表了一篇文章。
他认为long john这个词被广为所知，还要归因于二战期间美国被给士兵发放的保暖内衣，当时用的就是long john这个词。该词首次被公开提及是在1943年的一份出版物上，而Quinion找到了更早的描述———1941年，10月16日，发表于威斯康辛州Sheboygan Press上的一封新兵家书：
We have had but three days of rain in the nine weeks we have been here. Last Friday it turned a little cool so we were issued our winter clothes. We all hope we don’t get our ‘long Johns’ for a while because it is too warm yet.
我到这9个星期以来，只下了三天雨。然而，上周五，天气开始转凉，部队发了冬装。我们都不希望穿“long johns”，哪怕一会儿都受不了，因为现在穿太热。
而为什么用 john 来命秋裤？他给出的答案是这样的：
他在文中找到了1944年6月3日在威斯康辛州一份报纸上的文章（Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune）,文中似乎给出了john的典故。
许多新兵在放下自尊，第一次穿上*队军**发的long johns后，都会遭到周围人的嘲讽和讥笑。这long johns就是*队军**里发放的过冬衣服，但是负面效果就是让士兵看上去很滑稽。士兵套上秋衣秋裤后，会让胸部显得更加结实有肉，肱二头肌也显得更强壮，在军营里阔步走动时，就像John L. Sullivan（19世纪末期的一名重量级拳击手）在来回炫耀，从此这一保暖功能的秋衣秋裤就被称为long john了。

Many a rookie has been ridiculed and laughed at the first time he swallowed his pride and donned his LONG JOHNS. They are the winter underwear issued by the Army, and have the disturbing effect of making a G.I. look like a scarecrow trapeze artist. It might be added that they itch but good! After a soldier finally gets into his LONG JOHNS, he invariably swells his chest, flexes his biceps and struts around the barracks like a John L. Sullivan, after whom these practical if not slightly garments have been named。
原来Sullivan在拳击场上，常穿着一款白色长衬裤，所以被人联想到了秋裤。看下图：
虽然这一来由也不是那么让人完全的信服，但确实是可信度比较高的一种了。而long john的真正来源到底是什么，who knows and who really cares?
