最近几年经济不景气，很多持不同意见，不同价值观的网友们在社交媒体上因为很多社会问题和国际问题喷来喷去，其中一个有意思的现象就是“底层老百姓，底层民众”这个词儿被越来越多的提起来了；尤其是当说起别人是底层的时候那种凸显自己不是底层，隐喻自己是精英的优越感。那这么形象的一个词儿，在英语里面除了用the lower class, the poor, the uneducated, the mass majority等等之外有没有一个更确切的说法来形容呢？
自然是有的, 用the unwashed mass, 或the great unwashed就非常贴切，mass在这里可不是一团糟的意思，而是广大群众的意思the mass majority的意思；特指没有技术的体力劳动者，没有受过良好教育的低学历者，以及生活在贫困的底层民众等等较为广大的群体(The broader general public, especially those uneducated lower classes, the unskilled blue-collar workers, and the struggling class etc.)；
He is tired of working here, shoulder to shoulder with the unwashed masses; he wants to return to school and get a better job when he graduates.
他干够了，在这里每天和底层一起肩并肩劳动；他想回去读书，等毕业后找一份好工作。
