Annotation:

See what the northern countries show:

Hundreds of leagues ice-bound go;

Thousands of leagues flies snow.

Behold! Within and without the Great Wall

The boundless land is clad in white,

And up and down the Yellow River, all

The endless waves are lost to sight.

Mountains like silver serpents dancing,

Highlands like waxy elephants advancing(1),

All try to match the sky in height.

Wait till the day is fine

And see the fair bask in sparkling sunshine,

What an enchanting sight!

Our motherland so rich in beauty

Has made countless heroes vie to pay her

their duty.

But alas! Qin Huang(2) and Han Wu(3)

In culture not well bred,

And Tang Zong(4) and Song Zu(5)

In letters not wide read.

And Genghis Khan(6), proud son of Heaven

for a day,

Knew only shooting eagles by bending

his bows.

They have all passed away;

Brilliant heroes are those

Whom we will see today!

草书中堂《盛世》

纵180厘米 横94厘米

Calligraphy:Central Hall Hanging Scroll in Cursive Script Written by Xiangjun

Poem:” Prosperous Age” written by Xiangjun

Length: 180 cm, Width: 94 cm

烘鑪(中英双语)

释文:

大漠驰骕騻 深谷香芝兰 瓦釜旺当垆 黄钟响庙堂一诺值千金 十步享九芳 英雄蕴侠气 儿女共情长

Annotation:

On grey plains, horses are galloping in haste

In deep valley, irises and orchids(1) are emitting fragrance in solitude

In folk street, clay pots are boiling with a loud voice

In imperial court, classical bells are ringing in a resonant way(2)

A promise that’s weightier than a thousand bars of gold

A world full of men capable and virtuous

Heroes filled with chivalrous spirits

Sweet hearts immersed in love

Reference:

1.Zhi Lan芝兰 (irises and orchids) are symbolic of a noble character. Just as in the verse above, irises and orchids are emitting fragrance, although there is no one in the deep valley.

2.There is a Chinese idiom that goes like this: clay pots make more noise than classical bells and good men are discarded in favor of bombastic ones. But in the poem above, you can see that both, clay pots and classical bells, sound the same way and the popular and the elite have all been given opportunities to show their talents in the prosperous age.

You are self-reliant and diligent in reading and I think now your hair must have turned white. Across the miserable mountains and streams, apes are crying and climbing the ivy vines in the deep woods.

Poem: “Thoughts on Visiting the Thatched Cottage in Western Hunan” written by Ma Jigao

Calligraphy: Written by Hong Lu

The Thatched Cottage in Western Hunan (former residence of Wang Chuanshan) is lonely and antiquated. The pine and cypress of thousands of years remain fragrant. The Thatched Cottage owner’s profound and lofty works left behind the lonely sorrow and indignation for the times, which should be the contempt and resistance to power and alien conquest.

Poem: “On Chuanshan” written by Yang Chunqiu

Calligraphy: Written by Hong Lu

Whether ideologically or culturally, Wang Chuanshan’s works represent the peak level of the declining Yuan and Ming dynasties. The theme is the sadness for current events and the grief for the country’s downfall. Since its publication, no matter its style or its elegant manner, they have been regarded as outstanding performances. Who else’s works can be called the People’s Ballads Reflecting the Voice of the Times (the representative works of the times) except his?

Who else can rank first in proofreading and annotating the classics of the former sages (except Chuanshan)? The Thatched Cottage in Western Hunan is still so pure and lonely. What a pure land the Daluo Mountain is (burial place of Wang Chuanshan), where his epitaph has also remained to remind us of that year.
