Angela Álvarez wins Latin Grammy at 95 and makes music history—“it’s never too late”

Angela Álvarez made Latin Grammy history on Thursday by winning the award for best new artist at age 95. Her passion for music began in her youth. But her journey was fraught① with several setbacks, beginning with her father’s disapproval of her dream to become a professional singer. Álvarez was also separated from her four young children for two years during a time of political turmoil in Cuba in the 1960s, and she later lost her husband and only daughter to cancer. Through it all, she never gave up on her dream of sharing her music with the world. Over the years, she sang for her family about her life and developed a collection of songs she composed. At the encouragement of her grandson, she eventually recorded and released collection of her songs in 2021. “To those who have not fulfilled their dream, although life is difficult, there is always a way out and with faith and love you can achieve it, I promise you,” Álvarez said. 5.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia

The 5.6-magnitude earthquake in the town of Cianjur, about 75 km (50 miles) south of the capital Jakarta on November 21, killed at least 272 people and left thousands sheltering in tents with scant medical and aid supplies. Suharyanto, the disaster mitigation agency chief, said many had not received aid and nearly 5,000 volunteers were deployed to help distribute water, instant food, tents and diapers. Efforts to reach victims have been complicated by power failures, damaged roads and more than 145 aftershocks①. Indonesia’s meteorology② and geophysics agency said aftershocks are expected to stabilise within the next week, but warned of landslides③ and floods due to the rainy season. Rescuers remain hopeful that more survivors will be pulled from the rubble, and they are “running against the clock”, according to Deni Kurniawan, a rescue team leader for the Jakarta-based NGO Human Initiative. Christie’s withdraws T. rex skeleton from auction days before sale

Christie’s has withdrawn a Tyrannosaurus① rex skeleton from sale, with just days to go until the auction, after a paleontologist②, Peter Larson, president of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in South Dakota, said the fossil largely comprises copyrighted replica bones from another specimen. In a statement provided to CNN on Monday, the British auction house said the unidentified seller will instead loan the skeleton, which is nicknamed Shen, to a museum. Touted③ as the highlight of Christie’s upcoming Hong Kong sales, Shen was set to become the first T. rex skeleton auctioned in Asia. It was poised④ to fetch between $15 million and $25 million, according to auction house estimates. (CNN)

Sequel① to ‘Avatar’ gets Chinese mainland release date

Hollywood blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water , the sequel to the 2009 hit Avatar , is set to hit the big screen in the Chinese mainland on December 16, the same day as in North America. 20th Century Studios announced the release date in a post on Wednesday on Sina Weibo alongside a Chinese trailer② for the film. The news of the release date has excited moviegoers③ and industry insiders expressed confidence for its market performance, at a time when the film market has been lukewarm amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel returns five years after the original movie to the life of Jake Sully, who is living with his newfound family on the moon Pandora. However, a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, so Jake must work with his mate Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home. ( The Global Times )

Endangered tree-kangaroo has hoppy 17th birthday

Kimbe the tree kangaroo, a resident at the Australian Reptile① Park, is believed to be the eldest captive Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo living in Australia. In captivity②, it is estimated that Goodfellow’s tree kangaroos will live up to 14 years old, so the Australian Reptile Park is delighted to see the golden oldie celebrating another birthday. On November 21, keepers showered Kimbe in love and hand-delivered a carefully constructed avocado③ on “toast” which was made from pumpkin to celebrate the special occasion. Australian Reptile Park Director Tim Faulkner said, “We are so excited to see Kimbe is thriving here at the park and is happily celebrating her 17th birthday. Sadly, Goodfellow’s tree kangaroos are endangered and need all the help they can get.” Tree kangaroo numbers have been hit hard by the twin threats of hunting and habitat loss, mostly due to logging and forest clearance. The FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off on Sunday with a ceremony that precedes the host Qatar and Ecuador's opening Group A match in the city of Al Khor. The match took place after a colorful 30-minute opening ceremony which was fronted② by Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman. The first World Cup in the Middle East is a chance for Qatar to showcase itself to the wider world. Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Argentina, who came into the tournament on a 36-match winning streak. Goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais would make some key saves toward the end of the match to keep Argentina at bay③ and seal the deal for Saudi Arabia. Argentina came into the tournament ranked No. 3 in the FIFA rankings and were favorites to potentially win the tournament in what is seen as Messi’s final World Cup run.
