Many parents in the United States bought bulletproof backpacks for their kids as the new school year started, reported CNN. They were afraid that their kids might get caught in gunfire. This comes after a series of mass shootings in the US. In early August, a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, left at least 22 people dead and 26 injured, reported BBC News.

卫星导航系统

据《日本经济新闻》报道，中国的北斗卫星导航系统（BDS）在规模上已经超过美国的全球定位系统（GPS）。截至6月底，北斗共有35颗卫星运行，GPS则是31颗。
China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has overtaken (超过) the US’ Global Positioning System (GPS) in size, reported Nikkei Asian Review. As of the end of June, there were 35 Beidou satellites in operation (运行), compared to 31 GPS satellites.

本周二，教育部召开新闻发布会，介绍高中三科统编教材情况。今年9月起，高中思想政治、语文、历史三科统编教材将在北京、上海、天津、山东、海南、辽宁6个省（市）率先使用。
普通高中语文教材总主编温儒敏在发布会上表示，新的统编语文教材中，共选入古代诗文67篇（首），占全部课文数的49.3%。
"The new Chinese textbooks boast a selection of 67 classic works of ancient poetry and prose that account for 49.3 percent of all articles," said Wen Rumei, editor-in-chief of the new Chinese textbooks, at a press conference held by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Tuesday.
语文新教材精选了反映中华优秀传统文化的经典名篇（classic articles featuring traditional Chinese culture），从古风、民歌（folk music）、绝句（quatrains）、律诗（metrical verse）到词曲，从诸子散文到历史散文（proses），从两汉论文、魏晋辞赋到唐宋明清古文，从文言小说（classical novels）到白话小说（vernacular novels），均有呈现。
