What are the disadvantages of sharing opinions on the Internet?
I think there are at least two major disadvantages.
First, bullying others on the Internet without repercussions and not being held responsible for negative consequences, due to the fact that Internet haters and anyone who goes online are not using their real identity, I think is one major problem.
And second, the average person who shares opinions online are easy targets for manipulation. People tend to take sides these days and in a lot of cases, instead of expressing their own opinion, they simply replicate what the mainstream media says and as a consequence, they become low-hanging fruit for the so-called Key Opinion Leaders, who, for the most part, are simply profit-driven.
So those are two drawbacks that I can think of.
Why do people like to express their opinions on the Internet nowadays?
Haha, well, I think one of the primary reasons for this is that, quite simply, everyone has easy access to the Internet and so expressing one’s opinions is only a matter of pressing a button on his or her smartphone.
Unlike days of past, it was only the press and those in power that could afford to express their opinions in the public domain but doing so now is easy and free.
Another prime reason is the fact that, as I mentioned before, in expressing an opinion online, one can remain anonymous, not revealing one’s true identity, and subsequently gives them a sense of ‘safety’, I mean, using a pseudonym online is like wearing a mask, any Tom, Dick and Harry can say anything he or she desires.
Are there any apps designed for collecting opinions about products or services?
Yeah sure. There is an array of applications to gather opinions.
Product-wise, in China we have Taobao, Tmall, and JD, for instance, which not only supply products and services but also collect customers’ comments in a variety of forms…star rating, feedback, and videos, so much so that consumers tend to read these opinions before making a purchase decision.
In terms of services, a great example is that the authorities have designed apps to collect citizens’ opinions on civil service or business. Though I have to say, sometimes these well-intentioned apps are utilized by profit or otherwise-intentioned malcontents.
Why do some people dislike giving their opinion?
I believe there are two reasons for this, one has to do with personality and the other the external environment, I mean social pressure that they may feel.
In terms of personality, some people are born timid and indecisive, and they shy away from expressing their opinion, especially in the public domain.
Another factor is the external environment, for instance, when expressing opinions at work, particularly those where there may be consequences for holding such and such opinion. I guess in a way, not expressing an opinion is a form of protecting oneself.
