宣德炉是中国历史上第一次运用黄铜铸成的铜器。为制作精品的铜炉，明朝宣德皇帝曾亲自督促，这在历史上实属少见。宣德炉以色泽为亮点，其色内融。此件宣德炉以黄铜制成，底书“宣德六年吴邦佐造”楷书款，其炉身形制规整，敦厚之中不失灵巧精致，作为书房陈设颇为雅致。
此炉基本形制是敞口、方唇或圆唇，颈矮而细，扁鼓腹，三钝锥形实足或分裆空足，口沿上平行，铭文年款多于炉外底。明代宣德年间所铸的铜炉属焚香供祀之类，通常用于陵墓、寺庙及权势之家烧香，拜佛、祭祖神。明朝在300年间制作了不可胜数的器物，皆属上乘之作。宣德炉作为其中的一种，可谓前无所师法，后无能为继，是我国古代工匠智慧和艺术的结晶。
除铜之外，还有金、银等贵重材料加入，所以炉质特别细腻，呈暗紫色或黑褐色。一般炉料要经四炼，而宣德炉要经十二炼，因此炉质会更加纯细，如婴儿肤。鎏金或嵌金片的宣德炉金光闪闪，能够给人—种不同凡器的感觉。
宣德炉在我国技能美术史上，格外是金属技能方面，占有很主要的方位，它在明代与景泰蓝和明式家私是最杰出的三种技能品，其间以宣德炉显得尤为珍贵，无价之宝。可是有些仿的技能也十分好，尽管赶不上真实的宣德炉技能那么好，可是技能也不错，所以也有必定的价值，有的报价仍是很宝贵的。
目前在各大拍卖行成交的宣德炉，多是明中期以后的仿品，优质的仿制品成交价格也很惊人。5年前，香港古玩集团拍卖有限公司秋季拍卖会曾集中拍卖过著名收藏家王世襄收藏的一批宣德炉。其中，一款刻有“崇祯壬午冬月青来监造”楷书款的“冲天耳金片三足炉”，估价为500万至800万元人民币，结果以创纪录的1600万元人民币成交。
