EPSRC

University of Edinburgh
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics
Industry Inspired Photonic Imaging Sensing & Analysis
The programme
Our programme is cohort based with a duration of four years. Core technical courses delivered in two 60-credit residential blocks, the first from September to December at the University of St Andrews and the second from January to May at the University of Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt. Each block comprises a set of mandatory courses, but elective modules are available from our partner universities.
Our student’s progress to their research project in June, with EngD projects located at the company’s site and PhD projects being based in one of our six university partners. The remaining taught courses are delivered by the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in intensive blocks in years two and three.
Forming a strong cohort is an important part of the programme and our students meet regularly for professional and computational skills workshops throughout the duration of the programme. Our students take part in Responsible Research and Innovation workshops and attend Outreach Training.
Funding Package
Our students have their fees paid for the duration of the programme and also receive an annual stipend of at least £20,777 (EngD), £16, 277 (PhD). In addition to this they have access to a conference budget of up to £4000 for the duration of the course.

University of Cambridge
MRes + PhD (1+3) in Connected Electronic and Photonic Systems at UCL and University of Cambridge
Two world-leading universities have joined forces to develop the next generation of researchers working on connected electronic and photonic systems that will change the way we live and work.
The programme
This 4-year programme is delivered by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Connected Electronic and Photonic Systems (CEPS CDT), a joint centre between UCL and University of Cambridge. It comprises a 1-year MRes (Masters of Research) degree followed by a 3-year PhD (doctoral research) degree. Students study at both universities and benefit from their combined strengths, academic excellence and collaborations with industry.
4-year EPSRC funded studentships (fees and stipend) are available for eligible applicants.
MRes (1-year)
The MRes year is a combination of lectures, tutorials, projects and laboratory work. Students have a choice of modules across photonic systems and devices, electronics, circuits and sensors, physics, quantum and nano, optical networks, wireless communications, radio frequency and broadband technologies, machine learning, and the internet of things. On successful completion of the MRes students should be equipped to embark on doctoral research with confidence.
PhD (3 years)
During their PhD degree, students carry out world-leading doctoral research, supported by their research group. PhD projects are offered across a wide range of topics, based at either UCL, University of Cambridge or within industry.
Current PhD students are working on cutting-edge photonics applications for space exploration, biomedical imaging, 3D AR and VR, automotive holographic displays, next generation communication networks (5G/6G/LiFi), agriculture technology, electric vehicles, the built environment, micro-robots and quantum computing.

4-year EPSRC funded studentships (fees and stipend) are available for eligible applicants. See the website for details.

University of Oxford
Sustainable Approaches to Biomedical Science: Responsible and Reproducible Research (EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training)
The programme
Applications for entry in 2023 still open
We welcome applications from graduates who wish to make an impact in the field of computational biomedical research. Our students gain the broad skillset needed to confront current and future biomedical research challenges. We have fully funded places available within the following two themes:
Cellular microscopy and image analysis underpinning biomedical discovery
Physiological modelling underpinning biomedical discovery
Our unique and pioneering 4-year PhD programme provides comprehensive training to graduates primarily from the physical sciences who wish to undertake research careers at the industrial interface in this exciting new interdisciplinary field. We train future innovators and research leaders who will pioneer major advances in biomedical science underpinning the development of novel therapies and drugs through the development of cutting-edge computational approaches and well-engineered research software.
Underpinning the entire programme is an appreciation of the vital importance of taking a responsible and reproducible approach to computational biomedical research, and the programme therefore has a very strong emphasis on the development of well-engineered (open source) software to underpin these computational approaches.
Funding Package
Full studentships are available for Home and Overseas students.
