01

set to

China listing frenzy in U.S. set to be boosted by Didi IPO

英文新闻标题讲求精简, set to 一词就用的非常好; be set to 可以理解为be going to 将要,已成定势

比如:

Ms Chaney’s version of a story often misread is, no doubt, set to capture the attention of yet another generation of Chanel enthusiasts.

02

Ride-hailing & Supercharge

Ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing’s planned $4 billion New York debut will supercharge Chinese listings in the United States on the back of an all-time high in the first half the year, despite political sparring between the two countries.

Supercharge (vt.): make faster or more powerful.

eg. Aligning your plan of attack with a solid understanding of your motivations will supercharge your self-improvement efforts.

A total of 29 initial public offerings (IPOs) by Chinese companies in the United States in the first six months of the year raised $7.6 billion, the highest amount ever for that time period, according to Refinitiv data.

03

fallout

That was significantly higher than the $1.9 billion worth of listings in the same time period last year when Chinese firms were more cautious about uncertainties over the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

每次提起“ 影响 ”一词,同学们第一反应会是 impact、influence ,今天来学一个特别地道的词: fallout (n): the bad results of a situation or an action 后果;余波 ,可以看出这个“影响”是隐含了负面影响。

eg . But avoiding the sort of profligate spending of the US and UK has not saved Japan, Germany and China from credit bust fallout .

His reputation would be shot either way, he thought, and the fallout from resigning would be less than the grief from staying on.

04

Kick out

The rush of listings happened despite continued political tension between the two countries under President Joe Biden, and the looming threat of U.S. kicking out Chinese companies if they fail to meet auditing standards

Kick out (vt): to dismiss or eject forcefully or summarily

eg . The voters of Bath kicked him out in 1992.

05

appealing

“The Chinese equity story is still appealing to international investors, whereas the U.S. valuation and international fund raising opportunities are just as appealing to the Chinese issuers,” said Ivy Wong, chair of law firm Baker McKenzie’s Asia Pacific capital markets practice.

06

coming into play

“Having contemplated the audit requirements coming into play for quite some time, it doesn’t seem that the investors’ appetite has changed nor the issuers’ appetite to list and raise funds from U.S. listings has changed.

Come into play : to help produce or influence a result

eg . All your faculties have come into play in your work.

Personal feelings should not come into play when you are making business decisions.

There are now 10 companies with public filings to list in the United States, the largest being Didi which is aiming to raise $4 billion for a valuation of more than $60 billion. The 29 listings so far in 2021 compares with just 13 at the same time last year, according to the data.

07

press on

The Biden administration has pressed on with the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act, signed into law by then-President Donald Trump in December, which is aimed at removing Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges if they fail to comply with American auditing standards for three years in a row.

Press on : to start or continue doing something in a determined way, often despite problems

eg . Of course, Google is going to press on with its social strategy, but simply because it makes sense, not out of fear of any other company.

Your immediate concern is to press on with your own preparations, but how wonderful that with your upliftment there is so much to gain.

The biggest Chinese listing in the United States so far this year was Full Truck Alliance (YMM.N), sometimes referred to as “Uber for trucks”, which raised $1.6 billion earlier last week. E-cigarette company RLX Technology (RLX.N) followed closely behind, raising $1.4 billion in January.

Didi is expected to be the biggest U.S. IPO this year.

The share sale, which will price on Tuesday, will also be one of the biggest by any Chinese company in the United States since Alibaba raised $25 billion in 2014.
