BOI assures businessmen of minimising regulations

LAHORE: Board of Investment (BOI) Secretary Asad Rehman Gilani has said that the industry is bound to deal with 70 different types of regulators in the country, which shouldn’t be the case.
Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), the BOI secretary pointed out that they had launched Pakistan Regulatory Modernisation Initiative (PRMI) in a bid to modernise the regulatory regime and prevent regulators from becoming rigid.
Gilani emphasised that the laws under which notices were issued to businesses for minor infractions should be relaxed. He declared that excessive notices would be eliminated, regulations would be minimised and new regulations would be finalised after consultation with the business community. Under the PRMI, according to the BOI secretary, regulators will be trained in how to make regulations.

Textile mill suspends production

KARACHI: Khalid Siraj Textile Mills Ltd (KSTML) said on Monday it’s shutting down operations until May 31 owing to political unrest, import restrictions and an “unchecked” increase in the dollar rate.
“These factors have increased inflation, undermined the rupee, driven up cotton prices, driven up the cost of electricity per unit and, most importantly, harmed business confidence,” it said.
The textile maker has joined a steadily growing number of firms that’ve shut their plants because the country has run out of dollars to pay for the import of industrial raw materials.
Dozens of listed firms, especially in the textile and auto sectors, have faced supply-chain disruptions in recent months. The government has failed to revive the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme for months on end. The Washington-based lender has withheld fresh disbursements on account of Islamabad’s failure to fulfil the loan’s preconditions. The delay in the staff-level agreement with the IMF has also postponed the inflow of dollars from friendly countries, further deepening the foreign exchange crisis.

ECC refuses to increase price of Remdesivir injection

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet Monday decided not to increase the price of Remdesivir injection, used for the treatment of COVID-19, Radio Pakistan reported.
The ECC, under the chair of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, considered a summary of the health ministry for the maximum retail price of Remdesivir 100 mg injection — used for COVID-19 treatment — however, rejected the request deciding that the existing retail price of Rs1,892 per vial shall remain fixed.
The development comes as pharmaceutical firms are struggling to stay afloat despite local and multinational companies' repeated requests to the government for increasing medicine prices.
The News reported that the pricing policy of the Drug Regularity Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and the depreciating rupee have caused an extreme shortage of most imported and critical medicines in Pakistan.

DG Khan Cement successfully installs 7MW solar power plant

DG Khan Cement Company Limited (DGKC) has successfully installed a 7MW on-grid solar power plant at its site in Khairpur, the company’s filing on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) showed on Monday.
The company said the on-grid power plant has successfully started power generation.
“It will decrease our power cost mix, reduce carbon footprint and curtail reliance on expensive fossil fuels,” the cement maker said.
DGKC is one of the largest cement manufacturers in Pakistan with a production capacity of 22,400 tons per day (6.72 million tons/annum). It has four cement plants, two in Dera Ghazi Khan, one in Khairpur district Chakwal and one at Hub Lasbela district (Balochistan).

Spring sowing of Sino maize-soybean intercropping tech completed to stimulate local oilseed production

BAHAWALPUR, Mar. 27 (Gwadar Pro) - The spring sowing of maize-soybean strip intercropping technology, a high-yielding solution from China and optimized based on Pakistan's local conditions by young Pakistani scientists, is just completed in Pakistan. According to the National Research Center of Intercropping (NRCI), the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), the total area under cultivation with this technology this season is more than 1,100 acres across the country.
"These trials will play a significant role in raising awareness of this intercropping system as well as its benefits among farmers and policymakers," Dr. Muhammad Ali Raza said. Besides maize and soybean, various kinds of crops such as wheat, sugarcane, rapeseed, clover and chickpea are also being included in the intercropping research under NRCI, which shows the local scientists' ambition to improve crop yields and soil productivity in Pakistan.
