Supermoon dazzles the night sky over China
A supermoon was spotted in the night sky on July 14, 2022, across many parts of China. In the eastern city of Nanjing, the moon rose through the clouds and drew spectators to admire the view. It’s also known as a buck moon because it falls in July. “The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time,” as The Old Farmer’s Almanac ① says. “Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.” According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Purple Mountain Observatory, the next supermoon is forecast to occur on August 31, 2023. Musk abandons deal to buy Twitter
Elon Musk announced that he would abandon his offer to buy Twitter after the company failed to provide enough information about the number of fake accounts. Twitter sued Musk for violating the deal to buy the social media platform, asking a Delaware court to order the world’s richest person to complete the merger① at the agreed price of $54.20 per share. The company requested the trial begin in September because the merger agreement with Musk terminates on 25 October 2022. Musk’s lawyers argued the dispute over false and spam accounts② was fundamental to Twitter’s value and extremely fact- and expert-intensive. They said it would require substantial time for discovery③ and requested a trial date on or after 13 February next year. (AP and The Guardian )

NASA releases first batch of images from the James Webb Space Telescope
NASA debuted its first batch of full-color images from the James Webb Space Telescope, the biggest and most powerful telescope that’s been sent into space. The images — taken with JWST’s 21-foot (6.5-meter) diameter mirror — reveal the deepest, most remote stretches① of the universe ever seen. “Every image is a new discovery and each will give humanity a view of the universe that we’ve never seen before,” Bill Nelson, NASA’s administrator, told an audience of engineers and scientists who contributed to the telescope’s development. “You’re going to see the formation of stars, you’re going to see devouring② black holes,” Nelson said. Often described as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, Webb launched on December 25, 2021, after more than two decades of development. (Business Insider)

Ashes① of 8,000 victims found in mass grave② in Poland
A mass grave containing 17.5 tonnes of human ashes has been unearthed in northern Poland, close to the former Nazi concentration camp of Soldau. The grave contained at least 8,000 victims. The bodies are thought to have been dug up and burned in a Nazi operation to hide traces of their murders. The Nazis murdered Jews, political opponents and members of the Polish elite at Soldau. The concentration camp was built in 1939 for transit, internment and extermination and used throughout the Nazi occupation③. Up to 30,000 people are thought to have been killed there and researchers hope to carry out DNA analysis of the remains to find out more about the victims. Among the Poles who were murdered were members of the clergy and intelligentsia. (BBC)

Bill Gates plans to give away ‘virtually all’ his $113 billion
Financial experts typically recommend being careful how you allocate your money, lest you run out of it. But for billionaire Bill Gates, running out of money is the goal. The Microsoft co-founder announced last week that he’s donating $20 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, while reiterating his pledge to give away “virtually all of my wealth to the foundation” and eventually drop off the list of the world’s wealthiest people altogether. Gates announced his plans in a Twitter post, writing: “I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact for reducing suffering and improving lives. And I hope others in positions of great wealth and privilege will step up① in this moment too.” (CNBC)
