A Bear Dies to Save a Woodcutter

Once upon a time, there was a woodcutter who wanted to go into a mountain to cut firewood. On the way, he was caught in a rainstorm, so he took shelter in a cave. Upon entering the cave, he was frightened as he saw a bear lying inside the cave. As he was about to flee, he heard the bear saying to him, “Don’t be afraid. I will not hurt you.” Then the bear carried him inside the cave and let him share its fruit. The rainstorm kept falling for seven days. The woodcutter knelt down before the bear by way of thanks. But the bear said, “You will repay my kindness as long as you don’t give away where I live.” The woodcutter promised that he would keep the secret.

On his way back home, the woodcutter met a hunter, who asked him: “You have been away for many days and we all think that you have been carried away by the rainstorm, or have been devoured by a beast. How come you can return safe and sound with so big a rain?” The woodcutter told him all about what he had met and how the bear managed to save him. The hunter was so pleased to hear his story and asked him where the bear lived, but the woodcutter declined to give him any information about it. So the hunter lured him with the promise of some profit. The woodcutter was so greedy that he guided the hunter to the place where the bear lived. Then the hunter made a fire at the entrance of the cave, so the bear was suffocated to death. Afterwards, he went inside the cave to peel off the skin of the bear and divided the flesh of the bear into three parts. He gave two parts to the woodcutter and kept one for himself. But something strange happened: when the woodcutter reached out his hands for the flesh of the bear, both his hands fell off his body. This was what he got for his ungratefulness.
