China's speed. There has always been a mysterious speed in the world that goes beyond physics and is known by foreigners as "China speed”. In the spring of 2020, the epidemic was raging. China built and delivered the Huoshenshan Hospital in just ten days, saving the lives of thousands of Chinese people. "China speed" has also caught the world's attention greatly. In fact, this is just a microcosm of China's development and the speed of China.

Back in 2017, a video of a digger demolishing an overpass in an eight-hour period shocked the world. The demolition of the Longwangmiao overpass in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, began at 9 PM on June 30, 2017, and was completed at 5 am on July 1. When Longyan Station was rebuilt in Fujian Province, more than 1,500 workers were put into construction at the command of the commander. It only took nine hours to complete all the operations. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised that "China is developing advanced infrastructure more than 100 times faster than the United States."

Efficiency: China is a country that attaches great importance to efficiency. Efficiency embodies almost every aspect of Chinese life. Thanks to an extensive rail and road network, China's transportation is highly efficient. It takes only 4 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai. In some western countries, the 200km journey involves 4 train transfers. The Chinese government is also very efficient.

If you need to apply for documents, you can do it online, even if you have to go to the offline department,it only takes you one trip at most. Anyone who has bought online in China knows that China's express delivery efficiency is very high. It only takes three days at most for an express to arrive from Guangzhou to Beijing, and the average delivery efficiency is around 48 hours. In some Western countries, it may take you half a month to receive the goods.

Social security: Generally speaking, security in China is much better than in western countries. In most cities in China, the nightlife is very rich. At eleven or twelve in the evening, the residents can have a leisurely stroll without worrying about violent attacks, shootings, explosions, drugs, terrorist attacks and other problems. That would be unthinkable in most countries. Also, Chinese culture seems to have a strong sense of equality, so I hardly ever see any women being harassed by Chinese men.

De-monetization: Both foreigners and Chinese people acknowledge the fact that China has done the best and developed the fastest in terms of de-monetization. Eating, shopping, taking the bus and subway, watching movies, all these things as long as a mobile phone can complete the payment of any scene, there is no country in the world except China can do it.

After living in China for the last few years, I feel that China is a very unique country. For example, the language is different, food is different, the whole culture is different. In fact, there are several aspects where China is doing better than the West.

#1. Cost of living is an important parameter for most of us. You can spend one month in Shanghai, one of the most expensive cities in China, for RMB 5,000/month/person. You gonna be poor in Seattle/California, even if you earn US $5,000/month (US $1= RMB 7).

#2. Safety. When was the last mass shooting in China? Last terror attack? Illegal immigrants? Well, in terms of safety, as the western countries are becoming less and less safe, China is getting safer and safer. You just won't be allowed to disturb the social harmony.

#3 Food: China offers a huge variety of traditional cuisine. Each province, and most of the cities, have their own distinguished food. You can grab a filling meal for RMB 20. I mean just compare with western pizza and burger, full of carbs, and ultimately the source of numerous diseases, obesity and diabetes.

#4 How many western countries have the fast bullet trains? I can't believe Australian trains are so slow.

#5 One language: one of the advantages of learning Mandarin Chinese is that you can use it almost everywhere in China. Everyone over here understands Mandarin. Imagine over 1.4bn people speaking the same language?

#6 Dating and relationship: most of my expat friends in China have long forgotten western girls.

#7 Cashless payments: in China, we generally don't carry paper money. Just bring your phone and scan the QR codes. In fact, now the facial recognition system is replacing the QR code system. No need to bring even the phone.

#8 Travelling: China offers wonderful historical sites. There are over 50 UNESCO world heritage sites in China, the highest in the world.

#9 China is a peace-loving country. It doesn't go out to capture Vietnam and the Korean peninsula. When was the last time China fought a war? The US is still messing up in Iraq and Afghanistan. In January, Iran war looked almost a certainty (when General Qasem Soleimani was gone). Maybe Covid-19 avoided Iran fiasco.

#10 When the western countries are losing past glories, China is a rising star. About 40 years ago, the Chinese economy was struggling and the US was the superpower. Now the story is quite different. China is driving the world economy, and the US has lost its political hegemony, especially under Trump administration.

One thing that doesn’t get talked about is how well China has managed to avoid the kind of cultural atomization that the internet age has brought about in the Western world.

This is a weird one to explain. Hold on.

Before the internet, American mainstream culture was mainstream. Unless you paid for cable, there were only a dozen or so channels to watch on TV and only about 3 or 4 of them presented political programming like news or talk shows.

Believe it or not, there was a time when parents and kids in the US shared roughly the same world view and wouldn’t try to murder each other 5 minutes into any political discussion.

Fringe ideas like anti-vax, flat-earth, creationism etc. were not given a voice (at least not a credible one). This kept the nation on the same page culturally. And given that most families shared a TV or two, kids and parents consumed the same content, ensuring cultural continuity between generations.

The internet and smartphones have changed all this. Americans now all live in their own personal cultural bubble. Families no longer agree on the same basic set of facts because everyone has a algorithm-driven, highly personalized social media feed selling them a completely unique world view. This has lead to political polarization, social dissonance, and societal breakdown. There is no such thing as “mainstream culture” anymore in the US, or much of the Western world.

In China, there are more smartphones and internet users than anywhere else in the world, but mainstream culture is still very mainstream.

There’s still a huge cultural generational gap for sure, but not nearly at the same level as in the West. Parents and kids can at least still agree on things like how many genders there are, and whether or not vaccines will cause autism.

Another seemingly excessive rule in Chinese entertainment is that video games are not allowed to depict real world nations fighting each other. This is why games use pseudo flags or pseudo names to represent real nations. The goal here is to minimize violent nationalism.

Of course, every Westerner reading this is furiously typing: oMg that SOUnds lIKE an oRwElLIAn nIgHtmARE!!!

Of course it does to you. You’ve been brainwashed from birth to believe that freedom of speech and expression is somehow sacrosanct. You can’t actually present a logical justification for why there should be total freedom of speech, you just believe it axiomatically.

I’m not going to try and convince you that you’re wrong. That is impossible, because this is your religion. I can no more convince a nun that God isn’t real than I can convince you that freedom of speech has no practical benefit to society.

Just know that the ultimate result of your sacred “freedom of speech” is a world where your mother is your mortal ideological enemy, and the only people who share your particular world view are all in the same subreddit.

China can build major infrastructure better and much faster than the West, since they don’t have to worry about organized protests and paid saboteurs. Organized groups can not delay projects unless there would be a good reason for it.

But in Western countries, democracy often can be a hindrance not a helper when it comes to building major infrastructure. Let’s say in today’s times, you plan to construct a new bridge across the Hudson River in New York City.

The project would need to be approved by countless local bureaucratic agencies even at the planning stages, before construction workers appear on site.

Government approvals are not sufficient, just the beginning stage when all the documents are compiled and certified by accountants, lawyers and agencies, so they can allow a company to propose the project at the City Council, which they must vote on.

All City Council meetings are required to be public hearings, permitting local residents to observe them and voice complaints. That explains why many City Council meetings are noisy, because protesters will appear and demand the project get shut down.

By proposing a bridge over the Hudson, you have many local construction companies bidding for the project as well and if the City Council had refused to let them to participate in it, they will hire protesters to disrupt public hearings in order to delay approval of the project until the company that’s considered to be the winning bidder offers its rival bidders part of the government contracts.

Hence, you will have another 2-3 years before the City Council, State Government and Federal Government greenlight the project. But still it will take another seven years before construction workers can start work. That’s because the firm winning the project must hire environmental experts to write up detailed reports explaining why the bridge is good for the ecology of New York.

The so-called consultants will visit the proposed work site, measure the air and water quality, assign pollsters to interview people living or working area nearby, set more public hearings to invite anyone to voice their criticisms and write numerous reports and filing out legal documents.

So we are talking a minimum of 10 years from the moment a company hires a team of engineers and architects to design a Hudson River bridge before construction workers start building it, but of course the company can only hire local union workers and you have rival contractors who will be upset they were not assigned the contract, so they will launch another round of protests claiming the project is anti-Union even if the allegations are false.

Therefore, 12 years becomes the norm for a bridge design to break ground for the construction phase, but in New York you have labor unions that sometimes play dirty too. They will delay construction to force the company to pay more money to the Union contractor. The construction phase of the bridge may go on for another 10 years, but likely much longer.

So to make the dream of a bridge become reality in New York could take about a 30 years, while the same project in China would take no more than 2-3 years.
