The world is full of secrets. And you just have to pay attention and you have to explore and ask questions.
And you will find the most amazing stories. My name is Anand Varma.
And I'm a photographer. I'm interested in using a camera to help tell complex science stories.
Taking images of things that are hard for us to perceive with our own eyes. . . allows you to become intimate with a subject. It freezes this moment and allows you to study and understand it in a way that other forms of media don't allow you to do.
The first photo that I took that sticks in my memory was this area called Stone Mountain near Atlanta Georgia where I grew up. I was with my friend.
We had borrowed my dad's little digital camera. I came across a garter snake that was sitting in this patch of sun in the forest.
And I was amazed how close I could get. I got within a foot of it.
I took this picture of this snake just hanging out in the sun. I was proud of this picture.
But it was how excited my friend was about it. And it changed how he related to photography.
It was for me the best way to explore the natural world and share what I found. For close to 100 years National Geographic has been using photography to connect people from across the planet.
My aim in all my photography is that I can show aspects of my subjects that people didn't know about before. A honey bee is something that is familiar to all of us.
Through my photography people can see it in a new way and say "oh, here's this thing that I thought I knew. But here's something else that I know about it."
Seeing these details in the image, but you couldn't even see in your hand, you couldn't see under a microscope. That's what taught me how valuable photography can be.
It extends your perception as a human. And I think that's fascinating.
