When they arrived at Ch’ao Chou, more than a thousand faithful people welcomed the Master ten li outside the city. He stayed at Ta Chien (Great Brightness) Monastery, and people who wished to bow to him clogged the roads. On the tenth, they took the Canton Hankow train north, and stayed at San Fo (Three Buddhas) Monastery when they arrived at Wu Ch’ang. Ch’en Chen Ju arranged for a doctor to treat the Master’s painful wounds, and his condition improved slightly. He agreed to Abbot Hsin’s request that he hold a Kuan Yin session, during which more than two thousand people took refuge. When the ceremonies ended, he continued north, despite his illness. The assembly requested that a group photograph be taken as a memorial.

Old and infirmed, he still made the trip to help the great assembly.

His great resolve was strong indeed, connecting heaven and earth.

Passing through Three Buddhas Monastery, their picture was taken.

With a heart of utmost loyalty, he sought to repay the Dharma king.

198 Arriving at the capital and staying at Kuang Chi Monastery

The Master wrote a verse which says:

The karmic wind arises now and blows me to Wu Ch’ang,

Where my advancing illness and age inveigles everyone else.

Tarrying long for three full months at Three Buddhas Monastery,

I feel embarrassed at all this misery.

I have no desire to surpass the crane on a high rooftop;

My vow is that we together ascend the Way Place where Buddhas are selected,

As I ever think of Jade Spring Mountain and General Kuan Chuang Niu,

Who awakened to the genuine truth at the fall of a single word.

On the twenty-eighth day of the seven lunar month, they took the Peking-Hankow train north to the capital. All of the elders from the monasteries, various Buddhist groups, and others, such as Upasaka Li Jen Ch’ao and Yeh T’ui An, were there to welcome the Master. At first he stayed at Kuang Hua (Vast Influence) Monastery, and then moved to Kuang Chi (Extensive Aid) Monastery.

The gatha says:

The mind of man is in danger during this Dharma-ending age,

But the heart of the Sagely Sanghan’s Way was subtle.

He was steeped in a thousand years of merit,

And ten thousand generations will look up to his resplendent light.

宣化偈曰:

佛陀舍利子,

贝叶达摩经。

菩提道宝树,

我师亲手迎。

199 Accepting three gifts on behalf of the nation

Along with Dharma Master Yuan Ying and others, the Master formed the Chinese Buddhist Association at Kuang Chi (Extensive Aid) Monastery. The Master was nominated for the office of President, but he declined because of old age and ill health and assumed the title of Honorary President. The following resolutions were proposed to the government: 1) In all places, further destruction of monasteries and temples, the desecration of images, and the burning of sutras shall immediately cease; 2) the intimidation of bhikshus and bhikshunis to force their return to lay life will not be tolerated; and 3) all monastery property shall be returned forthwith, and there should be returned to the Sangha enough arable acreage to make the monasteries self-supporting. The petition was approved. The Master then represented the Association in receiving three gifts from a Buddhist delegation from Sri Lanka.

The gatha says:

The Buddha’s sharira,

A sutra written on a palm leaf,

The jeweled tree of the path of Bodhi:

Our teacher personally received.

200 Hosting a Great Dharma Assembly for world peace

In the tenth lunar month, the people of Shanghai decided to convene a Dharma assembly for world peace. They met and requested the Master to be the Dharma Host. Fang Tzu Fan and others were sent to invite and escort him. They returned to Shanghai on the eleventh, and more than a thousand people waving flags and offering flowers welcomed the Master. The meeting was set for the twenty-sixth day of the tenth lunar month, and ceremonies for the welfare of creatures both on land and in the water were held. Dharma Masters Ying Tz’u and Ching Ch’uan, among ten eminent monks, were requested to assist, and seventy-two other monks took part. The assembly lasted until the fourteenth of the twelfth lunar month and participants swarmed the Way-place.

The gatha says:

The purpose of the Dharma Assembly was to pray for peace in the world.

The Bodhimanda was most supreme, and all in it were at ease.

Ending disaster and stopping war, they did away with violence.

Blessings increased and lives were lengthened - an auspicious star had descended.
