The best shows and plays are on now in London

Dawn French: 30 Million Minutes

Address:Vaudeville Theatre

“Based on the hero’s life and career, 30 Million Minutes is more tragic-comedy than straightforward laugh-fest. The dark heart of the show, an account of the suicide of the hero’s beloved father when she was 19, is deeply emotionally played. The way she changes from that shocking plot into the funniest part of the evening is little short of brilliant; the audiences are left helpless with laughter.”

I Want My Hat Back

Address: National Theatre

“I Want My Hat Back, by the Canadian author Jon Klassen, has already acquired the fame of a children’s classic. This stage adaptation for the very young— three or so—allows a leisurely 55 minutes of enjoying the tale. Directed with warmth by Wils Wilson, it is full of fun and smile.”

ELF

Address: Dominion Theatre

“If you’re going to get rid of a lot of money in the name of family entertainment, you might as well choose this. For all its commercial, even cynical(见利忘义的) character, ELF shows the vital spirit of Christmas—our need to connect with our families, and our inner kid.”

Funny Girl

Address: Menier Chocolate Factory

“If Sheridan Smith was a star before the lights went up on Funny Girl, she was twice the star by the time she took the thunderous curtain call. The story-line is simple: a New York Jewish girl—with uncommon dreams but too-common looks—pushes her way into the attention of the public, but she creates her own crowd—pleasing kind of merry havoc(骚动)on stage, and makes audiences laugh like no other.”

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in Atlantic City and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. I can well remember the brightness of sunshine and what red color is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a disaster can do strange things to people.

Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me —a potential to live, you might call it — which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.

It took me years to discover and strengthen this belief. It had to start with the most elementary things. Once a man gave me an indoor baseball, I thought he was making fun of me and I was hurt. “I can’t use this,” I said. “Take it with you,” he urged me, “and roll it around.” The words stuck in my head. “ Roll it around!” By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. At Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it ground ball.

All my life I have set ahead of is a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on average I made progress.

25. Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Honest B. Strong-willed C. Warm-hearted D. Concerned

26. How did the author become blind?

A. Inborn B. By an accident C. By an eye disease D. By sunshine

27. According to the text, which of the following statements is true?

A. The coach found the author’s potential to live.

B. The author strengthened his belief the moment his parents told him.

C. The author won the championship at Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind

D. The author set many goals for himself and achieved them one by one.

28. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Fighting Against Blindness

B. How to Become a Ground Ball Player

C. Learning Limitations Push Me to Success

D. Parents Gave Me Belief

The world’s most popular type of banana is facing a major health crisis. According to a new study, a disease caused by a powerful fungus(菌类) is killing the Cavendish banana, which accounts for 99% of the banana market around the globe. The disease, called Tropical Race 4 (TR4), has affected banana crops in Southeast Asia for decades. In recent years, it has spread to the Middle East and the African nation of Mozambique. Now experts fear the disease will show up in Latin America, where the majority of the world’s bananas are grown.

“It isn’t here yet,” scientist Randy Ploetz said. He is one of the authors of the study, which was published in November in the journal PLOS Pathogens. “But our concern is that it will somehow jump the Atlantic, establish itself in the Americas, and cause some serious damage there.”

Once a banana plant is infected with TR4, it cannot get

nourishment(

营养) from water and soil, and basically dies of thirst. TR4 lives in soil, and can easily end up on a person’s boots. If the polluted boots are then worn on a field where Cavendish bananas are grown, the disease could be transferred. “Once a field has been polluted with the disease, you can’t grow Cavendish bananas there anymore,” Ploetz says. “The disease lasts a long time in the soil.”

Cavendish bananas are produced in mass quantities. “They’re what you buy in the grocery store, what you slice up and put on your cereal, and what your mom uses to make banana bread,” Ploetz says. “Consumers like the way Cavendish looks and tastes.”

One solution to address the problem, Ploetz says, is to try to develop new bananas that can resist TR4. “It really needs to be done, but we don’t have it yet.” He notes that we still have time before we need to worry about the Cavendish banana disappearing. “The question is, how much time do we have?” he says. “I don’t know. I hope TR4 never get over here, but never is not going to happen.”

29. What is Randy Ploetz worried most about the spread of TR4?

A. TR4 has caused great damage to the bananas in southeast Asia.

B. TR4 has spread to more continents in recent years.

C. TR4 will show up in Latin America where most of the world’s bananas are grown.

D. TR4 will establish itself in Americas.

30. From the passage we can see TR4__________.

A. can make a banana plant get too much water from the soil.

B. can be easily spread from one field to another.

C. can be easily wiped out once a field is infected.

D. has been resisted by the newly-developed bananas.

31. What can be inferred from what Randy Ploetz said in Paragraph 4?

A. There are large quantities of Cavendish bananas infected with TR4.

B. Cavendish bananas are popular among consumers.

C. It’s quite complicated to make banana bread.

D. Cavendish bananas are more delicious than any other fruit.

D

When it comes to school breakfast, two is better than none, says a new report released Thursday in the journal Pediatric Obesity.

Researchers tracked nearly 600 middle school students form fifth to seventh grade, looking to see if students ate no breakfast; ate breakfast at home or school; or ate both—and whether that affected obesity rates. The result: weight gain among students who ate “double-breakfast” was no more different than that seen among all the other students. Meanwhile, the risk of obesity doubled among students who skipped breakfast or ate it inconsistently.

“It seems it’s a bigger problem to have kids skipping breakfast than to have these kids eating two breakfasts,” says Marlene Schwartz, one of the study’s authors.

“This study exposes an important misconception that school breakfast contributes to childhood obesity,” says Duke Storen, from a national group that runs anti-hunger and nutrition programs for children.

While direct opposition to free school breakfast is unusual, says Storen, officials sometimes balk at(畏缩) carrying out “alternative breakfast models” designed to encourage use of the program— such as offering breakfast in grab-and-go bags or in classrooms, rather than traditional sit-down meals in a cafeteria. Indeed, the study was inspired in part by real-world concerns that school breakfast programs might promote obesity, says Schwartz.

In 2012, the administration of New York City’s then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg opposed offering breakfast in classrooms instead of school cafeterias, arguing that the change would make childhood obesity worse. A year later, an American Journal of Public Health study showed that, on average, kids eating two breakfasts in New York City schools consumed 95 more calories daily than did those eating one breakfast.

Researchers of the new study didn’t examine why eating double breakfasts did not affect obesity, but skipping the meal did.

32. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The study mainly focused on primary school students.

B. Students who ate double breakfast gain more weight than the other students.

C. The risk of obesity is bigger for the students who skipped breakfast.

D. It’s more difficult to have kids eating two breakfasts than to have them skipping breakfasts.

33. The underlined word “inconsistently” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by_______.

A. Rapidly B. Lately C. Instantly D. irregularly

34. Why was the example of Michael Bloomberg mentioned in the passage?

A. To show the government’s concern about childhood obesity.

B. Because he was the mayor of New York City at that time.

C. Because he opposed offering breakfast in classroom.

D. To prove that the new study is supported by the then-Mayor.

35. The above passage is probably _______.

A. an education plan B. a food advertisement C. a health report D. a hot debate
