Africa, for most people, is a mystery and a dream, which captures the imagination, with the world’s largest Sahara Desert and the primitive customs.

In the eyes of Liu Chang, a Zhengzhou girl, this land has a distinctive charm. In her recent book Saharan Africa - in the Eyes of a Female Journalist, published by Social Sciences Academic Press (China), she gives a unique perspective on the story of this magical land.
在郑州姑娘刘畅的眼中，这片异域有着与众不同的魅力和温度。近日，她在由社会科学文献出版社出版的《撒哈拉之南——女记者的非洲视界》一书中，以独特的视角描述了这片神奇土地上的故事。
Speaking about the original intention of writing the book, Liu said that when she returned from Africa, most of her friends would ask her: Is Africa hot? Is Africa full of wildlife? What is Africa really like? She found that most Chinese people’s understanding of Africa is still limited to the news reports and "Animal World".
谈及写这本书的初衷，刘畅说，当她从非洲卸任回国后，发现大多数朋友都会问她：非洲是不是很热？非洲是不是遍地野生动物？非洲到底是什么样？她发现，大部分国人对非洲的认识还停留在新闻报道和“动物世界”构建起的片面印象当中。
"Of course, they can’t be blamed because there are so few books about Africa compared to books about the western world. So I want to tell you about what I’ve seen and experienced in Africa.”
“当然，这不能怪他们，因为与研究西方世界的书相比，介绍非洲的书实在是凤毛麟角。所以我就想把我在非洲所看到的，经历过的讲给大家听。”
Liu said, Africa for her, is vivid figures, moving stories, joys and sorrows of somebody and nobody under the influence of political ups and downs and changes of the times. She condensed all these into words, hoping to give more people a new perspective on Africa.
刘畅说，非洲对于她，是一个个鲜明的人物，一个个动人的故事，一幕幕政治跌宕、时代变迁影响下的大人物与小人物的悲欢离合……她把这一切，凝练成文字，希望能让更多人借此有更多的视角来了解非洲。
"During my stay in Africa, I have seen the flower trees in Harare all year round, and the bright colors create a fairy tale world. I have seen African students wear beautiful and elegant school uniforms, even those in rural primary schools are decent. I have met countless ordinary African people who are courteous, warm and gentle, and they will always shine a light on my heart.
“在非洲驻站的日子里，我见过哈拉雷一年四季遮天蔽日的花树，那五彩斑斓的颜色构筑了一个个童话世界；我见过非洲学生穿的美丽典雅的校服，即使是乡村小学的校服依然是大方得体；我见过无数彬彬有礼、热情温和的非洲普通民众，他们永远是我心头的一抹亮色。
I’ve met Shona sculptors who can talk to stones, artists who sell paintings on the streets, humanists who study and preserve primitive tribal cultures, zoologists who bustle about to protect wild animals, and young people from the grass roots with dreams, who I think are the soul of African culture.”
我见过可以与石头对话的绍纳石雕家，见过在马路上兜售画作的艺术家，见过研究和保护原始部落文化的人文学者，见过为保护野生动物上下奔走的动物学家，见过出身草根却心怀梦想的年轻人，窃以为他们才是非洲文化的灵魂。”
Li Anshan, a professor at Peking University and President of the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies, commented that there are historical facts of Ming porcelain found on the island of Mozambique and the kinship between Chinese loving mothers and Zimbabwean orphans. With a wide range of information, this book is a colorful picture of social life in southern Africa, which will take you to the magical and beautiful continent.
北京大学教授、中国非洲史研究会会长李安山评价说，这里有莫桑比克岛发现的明代瓷器的史实，又有中国爱心妈妈与津巴布韦孤儿的亲情……该书涵盖面广，信息量大，是一幅南部非洲社会生活的多彩画卷，将带你走进非洲那片神奇而美丽的大陆。
"I don’t know since when I have become a cosmopolitan. Since I left my hometown Zhengzhou at the age of 19, I had studied for 4 years as an undergraduate in Wuhan, 3 years as a master in Chengdu, and worked for 7 years in China Radio International in Beijing. Then I was dispatched to southern Africa as a journalist for three and a half years, and now I am a correspondent in Pakistan. I have walked and travelled a lot, but my favorite place is still my hometown Zhengzhou, because my parents and childhood friends are here, with the best time in my life.” Liu said with emotion when speaking of Zhengzhou.
“不知何时，我就成为了一个四海为家的人。自从19岁离开家乡郑州，我在武汉读了4年本科，在成都读了3年硕士，在北京的中国国际广播电台工作7年，然后被派驻南部非洲任记者3年半，如今又在巴基斯坦做驻外记者。走过许多的路，看过许多风景，但最爱的依旧是我的故乡郑州，因为那里有我的爸爸妈妈，有我童年的小伙伴，有我人生中最美好的时光。”谈及家乡郑州，刘畅感慨说。
In Liu’s eyes, when she was a child, Zhengzhou was a quiet green city, trees everywhere, egrets in line, countless sycamore, poplars, paulownia, and willows. Although life is just a line between school and home, it was full of fun.
在刘畅眼里，她小时候的郑州是一个安静的绿城，处处绿树成荫，白鹭成行，有数不清的梧桐树、杨树、泡桐树、柳树……生活虽然只是从学校到家的两点一线，却充满了乐趣。
From Zhengzhou to Africa, the farther you go, the more valuable you feel the home is, and the more you can feel that the imprint Zhengzhou has left on your heart is indelible.
从郑州到非洲，走得越远，越感到家的可贵，越能感到郑州给心灵打下的烙印是无法磨灭的。
"Since I left home, I would make time to visit my parents and chat with my old friends in Zhengzhou every year. Every time I return home, I feel very secure. This is where my heart belongs.”
“自从离开家后，我每年都会抽空回郑州看望父母，和昔日的小伙伴谈心聊天。每次回家，我都感到心无比踏实妥帖，这里才是我心灵的归宿。”
Liu believes that "The Belt and Road" has become an important link connecting China and Africa. Zhengzhou is an important node of "The Belt and Road". The three "silk roads" (Silk Road on the Land, Silk Road in the Air and Online Silk Road) that have connected to the world are playing an increasingly important role. In the future, Zhengzhou will be increasingly connected to Africa.
刘畅认为，“一带一路”已经成为连接中非的重要纽带，郑州是“一带一路”重要节点城市，已经联通世界的陆空网三条“丝绸之路”正在发挥着越来越大的作用，相信未来，郑州这座城市与非洲的连接会越来越多。
"Let my book be a window into Africa." Liu said, "Zhengzhou is a galaxy of talents and changing quickly. Thousands of miles away from home, I can’t personally contribute to the construction of my hometown, but Zhengzhou is where my heart is, and I sincerely wish her more and more prosperous and beautiful.
“就让我的这本书成为大家了解非洲的一扇窗口吧！”刘畅说，“如今的郑州，人才济济，日新月异，城市风貌远非我童年时可比。我虽然与家乡远隔千里，不能亲手为家乡建设贡献力量，但我时时牵挂着家乡，真诚祝愿她越来越繁荣美丽。”
