This report reveals the rank of 291 cities in China’s mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan region from the perspective of comprehensive economic competitiveness. Zhengzhou ranks 20th, rising by 5 places in 5 years.
10月22日，中国社会科学院与经济日报社共同发布《2020中国城市综合经济竞争力报告》。该榜单对中国内地和港澳台地区291个城市的综合经济竞争力进行排名，郑州跻身竞争力榜单前20，排名5年提升5个位次。
This year, the top 10 cities are: Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Taipei, Nanjing, Wuhan and Wuxi. Among the top 20 cities, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Zhengzhou rise significantly. In particular, Zhengzhou moves up from the 25thplace in 2015 to the 20thplace in 2020.

According to the report, cities with strong comprehensive economic competitiveness are mainly distributed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shandong Peninsula, Yangtze River Delta, West Side of the Taiwan Straits, Pearl River Delta, and Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomerations, as well as central cities in central China. Since the outbreak, Zhengzhou has continuously been working to promote economic growth while strengthening the epidemic prevention and control. At the beginning of February, the CPC Zhengzhou Municipal Committee introduced 30 measures to boost the resumption of work and production. As employees return to work and enterprises resume production, the city’s economic performance continues to improve, with the recovery better than the whole province and the whole country. In March, the economy saw a sharp rebound after the previous two months’ decline.

In the first half of this year, Zhengzhou’s main economic indicators continued to pick up, with the rate of recovery higher than the whole province and even the whole country. Compared with the first quarter, the GDP in the first half of this year recovered by 7.5%, which was 2.3% and 1.1% higher than that of the country and the province respectively; the industrial added value above designated size rebounded by 10.3%, which was 3.2% and 2.9% higher than the national and provincial levels respectively; the fixed asset investment increased by 3.2%, which was 6.3% and 0.6% higher than the national and provincial levels respectively. Investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries achieved a faster positive growth compared with the first quarter, demonstrating strong momentum of development. In the first half of this year, the city’s general public budget revenue reached 63.52 billion yuan, with an increase of 0.7%, which was 11.5% and 1.4% higher than the national and provincial levels respectively.

Behind the strong resilience and recovery of Zhengzhou’s economy is its robust momentum of development. In recent years, Zhengzhou has concentrated its efforts on the construction of the national central city. While pursuing the coordinated development of four silk roads and five zones, Zhengzhou is also actively creating a new pacesetter of opening up and fostering pillar industries. The four silk roads have seen an impressive development, so have the new industries and new business formats. All these constitute Zhengzhou’s unique driving forces for development and make Zhengzhou’s comparative advantages more prominent. Zhengzhou is getting better, and it will live up to social expectations.
