Passage 1

Spending 50 minutes with a cell phone close to your ear is enough to change brain cell activity in the part of the brain closest to the antenna(天线). But whether that causes any harm is not clear, scientists at the National Institute of Health said at a conference last month, adding that the study will not likely settle concerns of a link between cell phones and brain cancer. “What we showed is glucose (葡萄糖) metabolism(代谢)(a sign of brain activity) increases in the brain in people who were exposed to a cell phone in the area closest to the antenna,” said Dr. Nora Volkow of the NIH, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was meant to examine how the brain reacts to electromagnetic fields caused by wireless phone signals.

Volkow said she was surprised that the weak electromagnetic radiation(电磁辐射) from cell phones could affect brain activity, but she said the findings do not shed any light on whether cell phones cause cancer. “This study does not in any way indicate that. What the study does is to show the human brain is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation from cell phone exposures”Use of the devices has increased dramatically since they were introduced in the early 1980s, with about 5 billion cell phones now in use worldwide.

Some studies have linked cell phone exposure to an increased risk of brain cancers, but a large study bu the World Health Organization did not offer a clear answer to this. Volkow’s team studied 47 people who had their brain examined while a cell phone was turned on for 50 minutes and another while the phone was turned off. While there was no complete change in brain metabolism, they found a 7 percent increase in brain metabolism in the region closest to the cell phone antenna when the phone was on.

Experts said the results were interesting, but urged that they be understood with great care. “Although the biological significance, if any, of increased glucose metabolism from too much cell phone exposure is unknown, the results require further investigation,”Henry Lai of the University of Washington in the U.S. and Dr. Lennart Hardell of University Hospital in Sweden, wrote in an article in JAMA. “Much has to be done to further investigate and understand these effects”They wrote.

Passage 2

One day in January, my uncle, my cousin and I decided to go hunting. We left by car in the afternoon. It was a Range Rover with four-wheel drive. It took us three hours to get there. After we arrived at 5:15 p.m., we fixed the tent, then made coffee and had a short rest. After that, we went hunting, using a falcon(猎鹰). We spent two hours without finding anything. On our way back to the camp, my cousin saw a rabbit. I removed the falcon’s bead cover and let go of the aggressive falcon. When the rabbit saw the falcon, it ran fast, but my falcon was a professional hunter. He flew up and came down to trick the rabbit. After two minutes, the rabbit was caught. We took back it to the camp to cook our dinner. We ate the delicious food, drank Arabic coffee, and sat around the fire talking until 10:30 p.m.

We left the camp the next day at 7 o’clock in the morning. We went north. However, around 10:00 a.m. our car got stuck in the sand! Passage Three

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. And You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.

With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.in a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

26.While taking a taxi in Finland, _____

A. a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver

B. a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride

C. a passenger can go anywhere he wants

D. a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration

27. We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland_____

A. provide meal for only those who live in the hotels

B. provide meals for any diners

C. provide free wine and charge for food

D. are mostly poorly managed

28. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.

B. The bosses in Finland are always too busy to check their employees.

C. The workers are honest with their working hours.

D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.

29. The word “those” in the last paragraph probably refers to _____

A. people who often take taxis

B. people who often have meals in big hotels

C. people who are dishonest

D. people who are worthy of trust

30. It can be concluded that _____

A. Finnish people are not smart enough in daily life

B. Finland has been a good place for cheats

C. the Finnish society is of very high moral level

D. all the Finns are rich

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners .

As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”. in a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

六、写作1题,15分。

话题:使用手机的青少年越来越多,对于这些青少年来说,使用手机有什么好处和坏处?以“cell phone: are they advantage or disavantage for teenager ? ”为题写一篇120字的作文。

参考文章大意:

第一段:青少年沉浸于手机会影响学习,而且手机辐射造成伤害;

第二段:青少年可以使用手机发信息问问题,帮助学习,科学家证明手机没有辐射。

第三段:我同意后者,几乎所有的青少年都使用手机,生活,学习,工作,建立友谊。

some people hold an opinion that using cell phone will bring negative effect for teenagers. not only do they point out the the reason that they will be so addicted to send message that abandon their study, but also argue that cell phone radiation will be harmful to their health .

However, other people take an opposite side. They firmly believe that cell phone can help their study when teenagers use them to send question to ask teacher as soon as possible .An example can give the details of this argument: there is no radiation according to scientists . There is some truth in both argument.

As for me, I agree to the latter idea, which I think the advantages of latter overweigh the disadvantages. My beliefes are based on the following reasons. nearly 100% of teenagers use cell phone to study, live, work, establish friendship and so on, which enrich their human life .In addition to the above-mentioned effects ,it might bring about happiness as well as knowleged .
