获得感

HUO-DE-GAN, or "Sense of Gain" in English

2月27日,习*平近**总书记在中央全面深化改革领导小组第十次会议上指出,要科学统筹各项改革任务,把改革方案的含金量充分展示出来,让人民群众有更多“获得感”。

“获得感”首先是要感受到改革带来的物质生活水平的提高。在精神层面,要让每个人有梦想、有追求,同时活得更有尊严、更体面,能够享受公平公正的同等权利。

The phrase became viral online after Chinese President Xi Jinping used it at a meeting on China's overall reform in February. He said, "The best way to test if reform has achieved its goal is to check people's true feelings about the reform fruits. Making people have a sense of gain is a decisive rule to measure the gold content of any reform."

互联网+

HU-LIAN-WANG+, or "Internet Plus" in English

“互联网+”就是互联网与社会经济领域各生产要素“相加”,即让互联网与传统行业深度融合,重构、再造新的发展业态。符号“+”既表示加入、融入,更表示升级换代、创新发展。今年3月份国务院总理李克强在作《政府工作报告》时,提出制定“互联网+”行动计划,推动移动互联网、云计算、大数据、物联网等与现代制造业结合。

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang brought up this concept to help economic restructuring, improve people's livelihoods and transform of government functions when he was delivering the government work report in March. The phrase is defined as the integration of the Internet and traditional industries through online platforms and IT technology.

颜值

YAN-ZHI, or "Face Value" or "Face Score" in English

如同其他数值一样,“颜值”也有衡量标准,可以测量和比较,所以有“颜值高”“颜值爆表”“颜值暴跌”的说法。2015年,其指称范围进一步扩大,由人及物,物品的外表或外观也可用“颜值”表示。

It's not about the face value of a currency or a bond, but about one's facial beauty. Chinese use the phrase to describe whether one is beautiful or not. For example, if a person has a 10-point face value, it means he or she is beautiful.

宝宝

BAO-BAO, or Baby in English

“宝宝”语出网络潮语“吓死宝宝了”。女生受到惊吓时常用此语来卖萌。后来“宝宝”独立单用,只要说话氛围协调,几乎在任何语境中,都可用“宝宝”或“本宝宝”来称呼自己。现在,“宝宝”还可用以指称对方。

The dual-word online slang refers to yourself, used as first person pronoun for anyone who tries to act cute. For instance, "It scares the Baobao to death!" ( = "It scares me to death!") 创客

CHUANG-KE, or "Maker" in English

这个词译自英文单词“Maker”,源于美国麻省理工学院微观装配实验室的实验课题。“创客”与“大众创业,万众创新”联系在一起,特指具有创新理念、自主创业的人。李克强在今年*会两**的《政府工作报告》中指出,双创是经济增长新引擎。

This word refers to the people who start their own business with innovative ideas. Also made popular by Premier Li who has kept encouraging entrepreneurship and mass innovation. 脑洞大开

NAO-DONG-DA-KAI, or "Brain hole opens up" in English

双语趣剁手?任性?主要看气质!

“脑洞大开”由“脑补”衍生而来。“脑洞”是大脑中需要用想象力去填充的“洞穴”,即进行“脑补”的场所。“洞穴”越大,想象越丰富。“脑洞大开”义为想象天马行空,联想极其丰富、奇特。

The phrase is similar to "inspiring" and imaginative". If you have a very big brain hole, don't be scared or offended, it actually means you are very creative. 任性

REN-XING, or similar to "capricious" in English

江西有一位老伯在网上买保健品,发觉受骗后,不但不报警,反而继续寄,总共被骗数十万元。老伯最后语出惊人:“就是想看看他们究竟能骗我多少钱!”有网友调侃:“有钱就是这么任性。”此语迅速传播开来。今年*会两**上,李克强在《政府工作报告》中谈到简政放权时说,“大道至简,有权不可任性。”

This phrase is a little more difficult to explain in English. It came from a story about a man who cares nothing about his money and continues to give away his money to a swindler for nothing even though he knows it's a fraud. The story drew a comment that went viral later, "If you have money, you can be RENXING (capricious)." The term became even more popular during a press conference at this year's annual Two Sessions period when a spokesman used it in response to a question about the country's anticorruption drive to go after "tigers".

剁手*党**

DUO-SHOU-DANG, or "Hands-chopping People" in English

双语趣剁手?任性?主要看气质!

“剁手*党**”,指沉溺于网络购物的人群,以女性居多。金庸《射雕英雄传》中的九指神丐洪七公,有一次因贪吃误了大事,一发狠剁掉了自己的手指头,但一遇美食仍然把持不住。“剁手”或源于此。

It's not a term about felony or suicide is rising in the world's most populous nation, but a noun describing the spending spree of Chinese consumers during the frenzy online shopping promotion. The phrase arose amid China's e-commerce boom in which many shopping addicts swear to chop off their hands if they buy any more goods online.

网红

WANG-HONG, or "Instant Online Celebrities" in English

双语趣剁手?任性?主要看气质!

“网红”即“网络红人”,指被网民追捧而走红的人。“网红”走红的原因很复杂,或因出众的才貌,或因搞怪的行为,或因意外事件,或因网络推手的运作。“网红”在2015年热度飙升,和媒体纷纷爆出明星大腕与 “网红”女友的恋情有关。The phrase refers to those who have attracted huge fans on social media. Those who won splashing online attention overnight would also fall into this category.

主要看气质

ZHU-YAO-KAN-QI-ZHI, or "Mainly judge my in-look (not out-look)" in English

双语趣剁手?任性?主要看气质!

“主要看气质”,意思是不要太看重外在形式,内在气质才是决定因素。此语在2015年末突然蹿红,成为一个强势流行语。有人说,在过分追求“颜值”的时代,“主要看气质”的流行有“正能量”意义。

The phrase is kind of contrast to the facial score "YAN-ZHI". First started by a pop singer in her post online, it asked friends on social media to judge only ones aura or temperament, not one's look outside. As smog frequently polluted north China this winter, a translated line about the phrase ensued: "God wants to see the air quality."
