Denmark to hold referendum on scrapping EU defence opt-out①
Denmark’s prime minister has called for the country’s citizens to overturn the country’s opt-out from EU defence policy in a referendum to be held on 1 June. “Historic times call for historic decisions,” Mette Frederiksen told a news conference, adding that the government “very clearly calls on Danes to lift the opt-out on defence”. Frederiksen also pledged to increase defence spending by 7bn kroner (£780m) over the next two years. Calling it the “largest investment in recent decades”, Frederiksen set out② plans to increase spending to 2% of GDP, in line with Nato membership requirements, by 2033. Participating in the common security and defence policy (CSDP) would enable Denmark to take part in joint EU military operations and to cooperate on the development and acquisition of military capabilities within the EU framework.

South Koreans elect Yoon Suk-yeol
South Korea’s next president promised to strengthen the country’s alliance with the United States and to deal “sternly①” with North Korean bad behaviour, bringing to an end five years of engagement with Pyongyang. Yoon Suk-yeol, who won the election by the narrowest of margins, said that he was open to talks with North Korea. But the result is likely to add to tensions with Pyongyang, which has been test-firing ballistic missiles at regular intervals and shows signs of restoring its nuclear test site. It will mean an end to the policy of engagement pursued by President Moon, who brought together Kim Jong-un and President Trump and held three meetings of his own with the North Korean leader.

Petrol at fresh record as oil and gas prices soar
United States President Joe Biden has imposed an immediate ban on Russian oil and other energy imports, while the United Kingdom said it would phase out imports by the end of 2022. The latest sanctions are likely to push up oil prices — resulting in even higher prices at the pump①. Russia is the world’s top exporter of crude and oil products combined, producing about 7 million barrels per day (bpd), or 7 percent of global supply. Energy analysts warn prices could climb as high as $200 a barrel for crude oil after oil sanctions are imposed by the West. At that level, the average price for a gallon of U.S. gasoline could exceed $5, a scenario Biden and other political figures are desperate to avoid. (Al Jazeera and NBC News)

The first person in the world to get a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig has died. David Bennett, who had terminal heart disease, survived for two months following the surgery in the US. But his condition began to deteriorate several days ago, his doctors in Baltimore said, and the 57-year-old died on 8 March. But Mr Bennett’s son, David Jr, said he hoped his father’s transplant would “be the beginning of hope and not the end”, according to news agency AP. “We are grateful for every innovative moment, every crazy dream, every sleepless night that went into① this historic effort,” he added. Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance ship found in Antarctica after 107 years
More than a century after it sank off the coast of Antarctica, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship HMS Endurance has been located, apparently intact and in good condition. The ship, which sank in 1915, is 3,008 meters deep in the Weddell Sea, a pocket① in the Southern Ocean along the northern coast of Antarctica, south of the Falkland Islands. The discovery was a collaboration between the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and History Hit, the content platform co-founded by historian Dan Snow. “This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation,” Mensun Bound, the mission’s director of exploration, said in a statement. He added: “This is a milestone in polar history.” (BBC)
