I think that Lance will at least somewhat return to form next season. It’s relatively low risk for LAC.
I don’t really understand it for Charlotte unless they were convinced he was going to ruin chemistry, however.

This trades makes no sense for the Hornets. Charlotte takes on more salary and for longer term (assuming they keep Barnes). Lance only has one more year left while Hawes has 3 more (he will exercise his PO for sure) and Barnes has 1. Hawes and Barnes aren’t getting that team better basketball-wise. The only reason they do this is if Lance is just that big of a locker room cancer but if so I’d just waive him, lose 9M of cap space for one year , than take on Hawes’ contract.

The reason I’m not in favor of this.
Lance Stephenson: 1yr/$9M remaining (+ $9.4M team option)
Matt Barnes: 1yr/$3.4M remaining (unguaranteed)
Spencer Hawes: 3yr/$17.3M remaining (+ 15% trade kicker)
I’m fine with trading Lance Stephenson or, hell, maybe even giving him away for nothing, as long as it doesn’t hurt the long term future of the team. However, Charlotte shouldn’t give up assets or take on bad long-term contracts just for the sake of getting rid of Lance.
This trade wouldn’t really provide any additional cap flexibility this year (sending out $9M and taking in $9M) and would definitely hurt flexibility in the long run. Charlotte could theoretically cut Barnes to save $3.5M, but I wouldn’t anticipate that happening.
Furthermore, I don’t really see how Barnes or (more importantly) Hawes would fit into the team. Yes, Hawes can shoot threes with relative consistently, but being a PF/C, would either fail to crack the rotation or take precious minutes away from developing players (Zeller, Vonleh, Bismack).
