Feels weird to call Timmy a superstar. Feels like he’s been a legend his entire career. "Superstar" just doesn’t fit his personality very well.

To be fair, Pop was always an amazing defensive coach, but I agree in that he was nowhere near the all-around coach which people see him as now. People see the "beautiful game" Spurs and think that they’ve been like this his whole tenure, when thats far from reality. Pop got carried by superstar talent early on just like any other coach. The Spurs offense for the first couple years of Duncan’s career was pretty much "feed Timmy down low. Wait for the double to kick out or go to work in the post". While the unselfish blue collar attitude was always in San Antonio (much credit to Pop for that), it wasnt until 2011-12 that they became the super offensive juggernaut of ball movement and spacing/shooting which so many see them as. Like I said, Pop’s always been amongst the best defensive masterminds in the game, and he developed into arguably the best coach ever. but you’re right on that he was nothing more than a defensive specialist getting carried by superstar offensive talent at the time in 03.

Helped that he had 3 all time defensive greats on this team too in Bowen Duncan and Robinson. Robinson was obviously past his prime but still averaged 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per 36 in his final year. He was still a defensive stud against anybody not named O’Neal up until the end.

Also lots of superstars would never let Pop coach the way he does so a lot of Spurs culture right now i’d credit it directly to Timmy because if Timmy wasn’t willing to let Pop hold him accountable then Pop would have easily been fired.

I don’t understand how people saw him as "boring". Even as a little kid I saw him as dominant.

He’s "boring" in the sense of having average-ish athleticism and seldom goes for highlight plays, while relying on his supreme fundamentals. Almost as if he’s the anti-Lebron.

Duncan was an outstanding athlete for the first 5 or 6 years of his career. He went below the rim a lot earlier than most bigs do because of injuries.

He was as dominant as 00 Shaq, 93 Jordan, or 16 LeBron. Greatest defensive series of all time, and he still had enough energy to be the best offensive player on the floor by a petty wide margin.

I hear it all the time that people will say player X had a better peak/prime than Duncan. Prime Duncan is the closest this we’ve seen to a player winning a championship solo. He was an absolute monster in those few seasons around 03 and his peak rivals anyone’s imo.

Tim’s game was complete, as complete as any other legend of the NBA. All he lacked was a 3-point shot, and I would argue that this shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a drawback - perhaps he just knew that even though he was capable of hitting 3-point shots, he could be much more effective by passing the ball out to the open 3-point shooting specialist on his team instead.
