WHAT A JOKE! I live 30-minutes from our Southern Border, and EVERY SINGLE DAY my cell phone (a ZTE) goes nuts with CONSTANT signal interceptions by law enforcement using Stingray devices! The local offices of federal law enforcement can tell you what's on my grocery list, any time they want to! Why should I care if the Chinese ALSO know, when my own country can't quit the spying on me?! This is all about commerce infringement to protect US-based companies (like Apple), and nothing more!

The concern is not about anyone seeing your shopping list or vacation pictures. The real threat comes from stealing intellectual property, which China is well known for. And there are other security related threats if they have access to information from those involved in our infrastructure, defense or other areas of strategic importance.

Almost all smart-phones in use today are manufactured in either China or Taiwan - regardless of the brand (yes, including Apple's iPhone). So why would the brand matter? It seems like there would be plenty of opportunity for China's spy agencies to install malware on all these devices if they were so inclined. But doing that and getting caught would ruin a huge industry for them overnight.
Generally, I am inclined to buy American products when I know they're made by American workers. But that isn't the case with smart phones. So I buy whatever suits my needs and pay almost attention to the brand.
