Bottled water seems like a harmless and convenient product of today's world. However, the truth is that the results of bottling water aren't all good.

Bottled water advertisements have people convinced that bottled water is healthier than tap water. However, in most cases, it isn't. Bottled water is stored for long periods of time at warm temperatures. As bottles age, the chemical used to make plastic flexible gets into the water. Microorganisms can also grow in this environment at high rates. Health officials are particularly concerned about how these effects influence children, the elderly, and other vulnerable individuals. In fact, they say that infants in particular should never be given bottled water unless it is boiled first.

Furthermore, some bottled water companies actually use the same tap water or well water that is available to the general public. A few companies have even been found using water sources dangerously close to toxic sites. Environmentalists have even more concerns. Millions of barrels of oil are used in the production, transportation, and storage of bottled water. This places a strain on limited natural resources and creates vast amounts of greenhouse gases. Additionally, a single plastic bottle can take over 1,000 years to break down.

Before you buy your next bottle of water, remember that the process that produces it is often expensive, unhealthy, and bad for the environment. Then, ask yourself if that's something you really want to buy.

Sneezing in the Sun

When going outside, we expect our eyes to have to adjust to the sunlight. But would you be surprised if someone told you the light also made them sneeze? For people who don't experience this unusual effect, it might sound crazy. However, it's a real phenomenon called the photic sneeze reflex.

The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle first wrote about the photic sneeze reflex over two thousand years ago, but scientists have not yet figured it out. The common explanation is that the nerves that control sneezing and the nerves for our eyes are located very close to one another. In some people, they might be so close that electrical signals from one can pass into the other. As many as 25 percent of all people have the condition.

People who experience the reflex sneeze a(n) average of two times when they see bright light after being in the dark for a while. When their eyes fully adjust to the light, the need to sneeze goes away. For most people, this reflex is just an annoyance. However, for others it can be extremely dangerous. For example, it's easy to imagine what might happen if a jet pilot suddenly sneezed after flying into the sunlight.

Though it still baffles scientists, there's no denying that the photic sneeze reflex is real. If you still think it's unbelievable, just ask a few of your friends. The odds are that one of them knows what it feels like to have a ray of sunlight tickle their nose.
