不复习吧,写作分数就很有可能成为自己申请的绊脚石;

The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But 80 percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumnae who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all female will improve morale among students and convince alumnae to keep supporting the college financially."

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. But 80 percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumnae who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation.

As the president and administrative staff of Grove College recommended, the college should preserve all-female education, as most current students and alumnae opposed co-education when responding to relevant surveys. The proposal maker thought this would increase students’ morale and keep alumnae enthusiastic in supporting the college. Although the line of reasoning in this argument appears to be plausible, there are a few unverified assumptions regarding the relative importance of the faculty and students’ attitudes, the alumnae’s donations, and the morale among students.

To begin with, it is assumed that students’ attitudes as measured by a survey is way more important than faculty members’ votes. In the argument, the faculty members seem to have opposed opinions to the students. But the students’ response may not come out of thorough investigation, and the survey to which the students respond may not be reliable. For instance, it is likely that the survey presented questions related to whether or the students are satisfied with the current situation, so many students may be misled and thus choose to support all-female education out of their love for the college. If this is the case, then the percentage of students’ preferring female education may be overestimated. Even if the survey is reliable, it is still likely that the students are so used to the present education system that they cannot see the benefits of coeducation. Faculty members, who are more experienced and far-sighted, may be able to foresee the future brought by co-education. Ifso, then the assumption that students’ attitudes should be valued over faculty members’ votes may prove problematic. Therefore, we need to examine the assumption carefully before we can decide whether or not it is wise to lean on students’ preference when making such an important policy.

Moreover, the argument assumes that the alumnae opposing co-education will not donate money when it is implemented. It is possible that, nevertheless, the alumnae would always support the college regardless of whether there are male students. Under such circumstance, there is no need to maintain all-female education simply because of the alumnae’s preference. Rather, the committee shall decide based on other factors. Similarly, we need consider the donation willingness of the alumnae who support coeducation. It is possible that they would withdraw the money or choose not to increase their donations when coeducation is not implemented. As such, it is important that we investigate the actual willingness of donation of the alumnae, so as to decide whether or not the assumption regarding the alumnae’s donations is correct.

Granted the aforementioned two assumptions are verified, it is still unwise to assume that all-female education will lead to improved morale. The argument takes it for granted that, morale will increase if the college maintains all-female education as the students and alumnae wish. However, this assumption is not necessarily warranted. It is likely that female students under a co-education system can benefit from the cooperation and competition with male students. For instance, female students may be able display their gifts in social work and volunteer fields in front of male students, which can cultivate their leadership skills. If this is the case, the morale may be higher when the college starts to admit male students.

In conclusion, we need to closely investigate the aforementioned assumptions so as to determine the soundness of the argument. The argument will not be tenable if these assumptions prove unwarranted.
