Returning Woodblock Prints

An Exhibition of Chinese and British Relief Prints from the Collection of

The Heilongjiang Museum of Art

Foreword

Some twenty years ago, two Europeans, the late Ms. Verena Bolinder-Müller and Mr. Christer von der Burg travelled across China, visiting many well-known Chinese printmakers and purchasing many thousands of woodblock prints.

Their collection formed the basis of The Muban Foundation they subsequently established in London, the Foundation being renamed the Muban Educational Trust in 2009. In 1997, sixty Chinese printmakers were each commissioned to contribute a woodblock print to a Portfolio, the Portfolio of the sixty works being published in 2003, now held in the collections of Museums around the world. The majority of the original woodblocks, from which the prints were taken, are now in the British Library’s permanent collection. In 2017, two decades after the works were commissioned, examples of the Portfolio, unfamiliar to most Chinese people, made a welcome return to the land of their creation.

The techniques employed in the prints making up the Portfolio include those printed with water-soluble colours, gouache and oil-based inks, the Portfolio includes monochrome woodcuts, multi-block prints in colour and those created with reduction printing, assembled block printing and collage. During the late 1990’s, artistic concepts flourished in the field of Chinese art, some artists employing and developing techniques inherited from the traditions of Chinese woodblock printmaking; others absorbed elements of folk art and some were influenced by Western art. All these different approaches are reflected in the Portfolio, regarded as a milestone in the development of modern Chinese printmaking and its relationship to the wider world.

The Portfolio is now returning to the UK to be shown alongside a group of forty original wood engravings by members of the Society of Wood Engravers. Wood engravings originated in Britain - at the end of the 18th century, naturalist and illustrator Thomas Bewick first used end grain boxwood to create wood engravings as book illustrations. His creative use of the white-line manner of wood engraving produced fine detail and rich textural qualities and his innovative techniques became another landmark in the history of relief printmaking. During more than two centuries of development, wood engraving experienced peaks of interest and troughs of disinterest. There are today, still groups of printmakers who specialize in wood engravings, combining tradition with innovation. The forty wood engravings from eight British wood engravers represent the diversity of contemporary wood engraving in the United Kingdom.

What the return of these prints represents is not only woodcuts and wood engravings, but a common pursuit of the beauty of art which transcends national borders. Concurrently, the exhibition The Soul of the Black Earth – Woodblock Prints from Heilongjiang Province is being shown in Oxford. Printmaking is paving the way for a new Silk Road with unique advantages for the exchange of Chinese and British culture.
