宾语从句的引导词，主要有 4 类：that；whether/if ；疑问代词和疑问副词。

昨天我们详细讲了that 作为从句引导词，那些不能被省略的 9 个场景，可谓是 that 的高光时刻。

今天，我们就来继续讲讲第二类引导词： whether/if。

whether 或 if 不能和 that 或其它连接词同时使用，也不能省去，它们在句子中不充当任何句子成分，但有词义，可翻译为“是否”，先举个例子再次回顾下：

- I wonder whether/if it is true. 我不知道是不是真的。(whether 和 if 可以任选其一使用)

Whether 和 if 这两个词最有意思的地方是，它们在引导宾语从句时，大多数时候是可以互相替换使用的，也就是我们汉语里常说的：义同字不同，都表示“是否”，但也有不能彼此替换的时候，下面分别讲述：

whether 可以被 if 替换吗？

☆只能用 whether 不能用 If 的 6 种情况：

1、当宾语从句置于句首时

- Whether it is true or not, I can't tell.这是真的还是假的，我不知道。

2、在介词后只能用 whether

- They are talking about whether he will win the game.他们正在谈论他是否会赢得这场比赛。(在介词 about 后只能用 whether，不能用 if)

3、与 or not 连用时

- I can’t say whether or not they can come on time.我不知道他们是否能准时来。(or not 紧紧跟在 whether 之后，不能用 if)- They are talking about whether to go there or not.他们正在讨论是否去那里。(虽然 or not 在句末，但是这里的 whether 也不能替换为 if)

4、whether 后接不定式时

- I don't know whether to attend the meeting.我不知道是否参加会议。(因为后面跟着 to...所以这里的 whether 不能替换为 if)

5、动词discuss、decide 之后时

- We'll discuss whether he needs an operation. 我们将讨论他是否需要手术。(在 discuss 后，所以这里的 whether 不能替换为 if)

- Time for Toronto to decide whether it wants to keep its artists.多伦多是时候决定是否要留住它的艺术家了。(在 decide 后，所以这里的 whether 不能替换为 if)

6、在whether 与 if 含义易混时

- Please let me know whether you want to go.请让我知道你是否想去。( 如果换成 if ，则可能被误解为“如果想来，请告诉我，所以用whether 而不用 if)

号外：

接下来替 if 报个仇，讲一个只能用 if 而不能用 whether 的宾语从句：

☆ if引导否定的宾语从句时

- He asked if I didn’t come to school yesterday.他问我昨天是不是没来学校。(从句是否定句，所以这里只能用 if 而不能用 whether )
