Chester

Chester was a wild horse. He lived out West with other wild horses.
彻斯特是一匹野马。他跟其他野马一起生活在西部。

“I wish someone loved me,” said Chester. “I wish someone took care of me .”
彻斯特说:“我希望有人爱我、照顾我。”

“You are silly, “ said the other horses. “It is fun to be wild.”
其他野马说:“你太傻了。自由自在多好啊。”

One day men came with ropes. They were looking for wild horses.
一天,人们带着套马索来了,他们正在寻找野马。

“I am glad to see you,”said Chester. “Please put a rope on me.”
“很高兴看到你们,”彻斯特说。“请套上我吧。”

“That horse cannot run,” said the men. “We do not want him.”
人们说:“那匹马不会跑,我们不要他。”

They took all the other horses. They did not take Chester.
他们把其他马都带走了,没有带彻斯特。

"NO one wants me either," said a skunk.
“也没有人想要我,” 一只臭鼬说。

"I think I know why," said Chester.
He left in a hurry.
“我想我知道为什么,”切斯特说。
他匆匆离开了。

Chester ran and ran. He came to a farm.
“Maybe someone here wants me,” he said.
彻斯特跑啊,跑啊。他来到一个农场。
他说:“可能这里有人想要我。”

“You can’t give milk,” said a cow.
“你不能产奶。”母牛说。

“You can’t lay eggs,” said a hen.
“你不能下蛋。”母鸡说。

“And I pull the wagon around here,” said a white horse.

“Good-by,” said Chester. He walked down the road.
"再见。" 彻斯特说。他上路了。

A car came by.
"This car has 250 horse power,"
said the man in the car.
一辆汽车开了过来。

"I have one horse power," said Chester.
“我只有一马力,”切斯特说。

The car stopped at a gas station.
Chester stopped too.
汽车停在加油站。
切斯特也停了下来。

"I'll have ten gallons of gas," said the man.
"I'll have ten gallons of water," said the Chester.
“我要十加仑汽油,”那人说。
“我要十加仑水,”切斯特说。

Chester saw a sign.
"I am hungry," he said.
切斯特看到了一个标志。
“我饿了,”他说。

"Oh, dear, I did not see the first letter.
I cannot eat 'COATS,' " said Chester.
“哦,天哪,我没有看到第一个字母。
我不能吃 “大衣”,”切斯特说。

Chester saw a fruit store.
“I’ll have a pound of apples,” said a lady.
彻斯特看到一家水果店。
"我要一磅苹果。"一位女士说。

“I’ll have a pound too,” said Chester.
“Can you pay for them?” said the man.
“No,” said Chester.
"我也要一磅。"切斯特说。
"你买得起吗?"店主说。
"买不起。" 切斯特说。

“Then come back when you can pay,”
“All right,”said Chester.
“Your apples are good.”
“那等你有钱了再来吧。”店主说。
“好吧,”彻斯特说道,“你的苹果味道很好。”

Chester looked in a house.
A lady was having tea.
"How much sugar do you want?" she said.
切斯特往房子里看了看。
一位女士正在喝茶。
“你要多少糖?”她说。

“ As much as I can have," said Chester.
“尽可能多的,”切斯特说。

Chester went by a toy store.
"I wish I had a rocking horse," said a child.
切斯特路过一家玩具店。
“我真希望有一匹摇摇马,”一个孩子说。

"I can be a rocking horse,"
said Chester. "Look!"
“我可以是一匹摇摇马,”
切斯特说。“看!”

"You are too big for our house," said the mother.
“你对我们的房子来说太大了,”母亲说。

Chester saw a statue of a horse.
"Maybe I can be a statue," he said.
切斯特看到了一尊马的雕像。
“也许我可以成为一尊雕像,”他说。

He stood very still.
他一动不动地站着。

All the people thought he waw a statue.
所有的人都认为他有一尊雕像。

All the birds thought he was a statue.
所有的鸟都认为他是一尊雕像。

Chester saw a lady with a feather in her hat.
切斯特看到一位女士帽子上有一根羽毛。

"I will sneeze if that feather touches my nose," said Chester.
切斯特说:“如果羽毛碰到我的鼻子,我会打喷嚏的。”

The feather touched his nose.
羽毛碰到了他的鼻子。

"AH-CHOO!"
"啊-啾!"

"Statues don't sneeze,"
said the birds and the people.
"Horses do,"said Chester.
He walked away.
“雕像不会打喷嚏的,”
鸟儿和人们说。
“马会的,”切斯特说。
他走开了。

Chester walked by a fire house.
“Long ago horses pulled the fire engines,” said a man.
彻斯特走过一个消防站。
"很久以前,消防车是用马拉的。" 一个男人说。

The bells rang!
There was a fire some place.
警铃响了!有地方着火了。

Down the poles came the firemen.
消防员们顺着杆子滑下来。

They could not start the engine.
他们启动不了汽车的发动机。

“What will we do?” said the firemen.
“怎么办?”消防员说。

“I will get you there in time,” said Chester.
“我会把你们及时送到火灾现场。”彻斯特说。

Down the street they went. “Clang! Clang! Clang!” said Chester.
He got them there in time.
他们在街上走着。“嘿!嘿!嘿! ”彻斯特叫道。
他及时把消防员们送到了。

“Thank you,” said the firemen.
“The engine is running again.
We do not need you now.”
"谢谢你," 消防员说。
"汽车发动机又开始运转了。
现在不需要麻烦你了。”

Chester walked and walked.
He saw a merry-go-round.
彻斯特走啊,走啊。
他看到了旋转木马。

“I think they need me here,” he said.
“我觉得这里需要我。”他说。

The children ran to the horses.
一群小孩跑了过来。

One little boy got on Chester.
一个小男孩骑到了彻斯特身上。

Around and around they went!
The children loved the ride.
So did Chester.
他们转了一圈又一圈!
孩子们喜欢骑马。
彻斯特也喜欢。

The ride ended.
The children got off the horses.
结束了。
孩子们从马背上下来。

“My horse was real,” said the little boy.
“我的马是真的。”小男孩说。

“He was not real,” said the children.
“Merry-go-round horses are never real.”
“他不是真的,”孩子们说道,
“旋转木马就不是真的。”

“A real horse runs when you say ‘Giddyap!’” said one child.
“Let’s say it,” said another child.
“你说‘嘚儿驾’,一匹真正的马就会跑起来。”一个孩子说。
“那我们试试。”另一个孩子说。

They all said it together.
“GIDDYAP!”
他们齐声叫道。
“得儿,驾! ”

Chester ran.
彻斯特跑了起来。

He ran and ran and ran.
The men with ropes saw him.
“Whoa!” they said.
他跑啊,跑啊,跑啊。
带着套马索的人们看到了他。
“哇哦! ”人们惊叹。

“Do you still want to come with us?” said the men.
“Yes,” said Chester.
“你还想跟我们一起走吗?”人们说。
“想。”彻斯特说。

They took him to a bright, clean stable.
All the other horses were there.
他们把它带到一个明亮、干净的马厩。
其他马也都在那里。

“You are right, Chester,” said the horses.
“It is fun here. It is nice to be loved and cared for.”
“你说得对,彻斯特,”其他马说。
“这里很好。被爱、被照顾,真的很好。”

“That makes sense,” said Chester.
“Good horse sense.”
"那是有道理的," 切斯特说,
" 非常丰富的常识 。"
