1) Mr. Jackson’s father had just passed away. He had died of cancer. George had sat up with him during the last night at the hospital. Both men knew that the end was drawing near, but the older man kept on talking cheerfully.

乔治-杰克森先生的父亲刚刚去世了,因为癌症。杰克森先生在医院陪他度过了最后一个晚上。他们俩人都知道分别在即,但是老父亲还是高高兴兴地说着话。

pass away:die (generally used only to refer to a friend or a relative)

去世(通常只用于朋友或亲戚)

draw near:(drew near, have drawn near)come close, approach 接近,临近

2)“I am not unhappy," he told his son.“Sometimes life has been difficult, but I usually faced up to its problems. When I was a student, I tried out for the football team and didn’t meet with success. I dropped out of high school for a year after that.

老父亲跟自己的儿子说:“我没有难过。有时候生活总是很艰难,但是我通常都直面问题。 我还是个学生的时候,我试过加入足球队踢足球,但是没有成功。之后我高中辍学一年。”

face up to:meet boldly, oppose strongly, admit the difficulty or danger of

drop out of:stop going to or participating in (often a school or a contest)

辍学,退赛

eg.: Dropping out of school is usually not wise. 通常,辍学不是很明智的举动。

3) I fell in with some young men who were robbing people on the streets. We didn’t use real guns. We held people up with wooden guns that looked real.

我加入了一些小混混,上街抢劫,我们用的不是真枪,是木头枪,看起来是真枪,为了吓住他们。

fall in with:(fall, fell, fallen)join, happen to meet or associate with (bad companions) 加入,跟坏人混在一起

hold up:rob(often with a gun or other weapon), stop by force and rob

持械抢劫

4) “The police arrested five of us and made us line up at the station. They called in people who had been robbed and asked them to pick out the robber. The boy who had done most of the robbing was not there. He had gotten away.

“警方逮了五个人,让我们排成一排,他们召集了被抢劫的受害人,让他们指认谁是劫匪。主犯不在里头,他早已经跑了。”

line up:form a line, stand in line, get into a line (= British queue up)

排成一排(英式说法是queue up)

call... in: ask (someone) to come to a place 召集

pick out ..:identify from a group 从一群人里辨认,指认

get away:(got away, [have] got or gotten away)

escape, become free of whatever is holding one 逃跑

5) ’One of the people picked out another boy and me, but of course we didn’t let on that we were guilty. I promised myself that if I got out of trouble, I’d go back to school and never steal again. I’ve never gone back on that promise.

“其中一个受害人认出了另一个男孩和我,当然我们没有承认。当时我跟自己说:如果能躲开这场麻烦,我就回学校、再也不偷不抢了。我从来没有违背过那个承诺。”

let on: allow it to be known, admit (usually followed by a clause starting with that) (informal) (非正式用语,通常后跟that从句) 透漏,泄漏,承认

eg. Billy didn’t let on that he was hurt. 比利没给别人说他受伤了。

get out of:become free of, go out from, escape from, leave 摆脱,逃离

go back on:fail to keep (a promise), not do what one has agreed to do 违背承诺

eg. ’Always do what you promise," he once told George.“Never go back on your word.’ 他曾跟乔治说:“说了就要做到,绝对不要食言。”

6) “I met with a lawyer several times, and at the trial the judge let me off with a warning. Back in school I worked hard and graduated, and then I looked for a job.

“我见了几次律师,庭审时法官给了我警告的处分,就放了我。回到学校后,我努力学习、顺利毕业,然后找了份工作。”

let... off….: allow to go free or unpunished; 放人

If you let someone off, you give them a lighter punishment than they expect or no punishment at all. 对…宽大处理

7) A couple of years later I met your mother and we really fell for each other. I was ready to settle down, and we got married.

两年后我遇到了你的妈妈,我们真的很爱对方,我也想成家了,我们就结婚了。

fall for:become very fond of, begin to love, fall in love with (informal) 喜欢,爱上

eg.: He fell for a girl in his class at school. 他喜欢上了班里的一个女生。

settle down: begin to lead a regular life, start a home or family 安定,成家

8) ’ Your mother always stood by me, even when times were hard and food was scarce. When I needed help, she always gave it to me. She never hung back. She was a wonderful woman, George.

“你母亲总是支持我,哪怕是哪些艰难的、食不果腹的日子。我需要帮助的时候,她总会帮我。她从不踌躇不前。她特别好,乔治。”

stand by sb.: If you stand by someone, you continue to give them support, especially when they are in trouble. 继续支持(尤指身处困境的人)

hang back: (hung back, [have] hung back) be unwilling to go forward

踌躇不前;退缩,犹豫

9) I look back on our years of marriage with no regrets. Sara and I always pulled together like a team of——a team of ——a team of good horses. ‘

想起我们结婚的那些年,我没有任何遗憾。Sara和我就像齐驱并驾的良马总是劲往一处使,配合得很好。

pull together:work together, cooperate 一起工作,合作

10) He was getting tired and was beginning to drift off but he tried to keep talking. His son could hardly hold back the tears.

老父亲累了、开始失去了意识,但是他还在试着说下去。儿子已经憋不住眼中的泪水了。

drift off:become unconscious, go to sleep; (of the voice) become indistinct

没有了意识、睡了、声音变得不清晰

11) ”She was a- was a wonderful- wonderful….“ The old man’s voice faded, and his breathing suddenly stopped. George rang for the nurse.

“她是个很好……很好的……”老人的声音渐渐低了下去,他的呼吸突然停止。乔治按铃叫护士。

ring for:call by using a bell or buzzer 按铃叫人
