First baby in Spain born immunized against Covid

Baby Bruno was born in the Can Misses hospital in Ibiza last week and has earned the accolade① of being the first baby already immunized against Covid-19, thanks to the fact that his mum was vaccinated② when she was pregnant. Obstetric coordinator Raquel Gascon said that the medical community only had “scientific literature” suggesting that inoculation late in a pregnant might generate “an immune③ response in the foetus” but little Bruno has provided the proof that the vaccination of an expectant④ mother can indeed deliver “an adequate amount of antibodies against the coronavirus.” The hospital explained that shortly after his birth, samples were taken from Bruno and his mum’s umbilical cord and sent to the Son Espases hospital for analysis. Here they found that the baby had 5,000 antibodies while his mother had close to 8,000. Medical experts are now anxiously awaiting the births of two further babies whose mothers, both health care workers, were vaccinated against Covid in their third trimester to see if these infants will also be born with coronavirus antibodies. Russia registers “world’s first” coronavirus vaccine Carnivac-Cov for animals

Russia has registered the world’s first coronavirus vaccine for animals, country’s veterinary① and phytosanitary② watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor announced on Wednesday. Named Carnivac-Cov, the Russian coronavirus vaccine is designed for animals that are vulnerable③ to COVID-19 infection like cats, dogs and minks. It is developed by the Federal Centre for Animal Health. The vaccine had shown no side effects during trials. Konstantin Savenkov, the Deputy Head of Rosselkhoznadzor said, “Dogs, cats, arctic foxes, minks, foxes, and other animals were involved in the clinical trials of Carnivac-Cov, which started in October of last year. The results of the tests allow us to conclude that the vaccine is harmless for the animals and has high immunogenic④ activity, with coronavirus antibodies⑤ developing in 100% of cases.” (Yahoo News)

FAST officially opens up to world’s scientists

China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, the world’s most sensitive and largest single-dish radio telescope, officially opened for use by scientists around the world on Wednesday. Astronomers can visit its website (fast.bao.ac.cn) to submit applications for observations, the National Astronomical Observatories, a subsidiary① of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in a statement. Results will be announced on July 20 after evaluation of the applications, with international observations to kick off in August. Approximately② 450 hours — 10 percent of this year’s observation time — are expected to be allocated to③ foreign scientists. The first round of opening for overseas applications will close on May 15, said Jiang Peng, the telescope’s chief designer. He told China National Radio the applications will then be submitted to FAST’s scientific committee and its time allocation committee for screening and evaluation. The observatories said FAST will provide its research facilities to the world with an open attitude, offering more observation options for the international astronomical④ community. ( China Daily )

Blames to WHO report groundless
西方无端指责新冠溯源报告
On Monday, the World Health Organization announced it had received the report of the expert team that visited China to conduct field research in Wuhan. The report was scheduled to be released to the public on Tuesday. However, it had already been leaked① to some Western media outlets, many of which have been quick to cast aspersions② on it. Yet for all the attempts to pin the blame for the pandemic on China③, the report states that: “The findings suggest that circulation of SARS-CoV-2 (the scientific name for the virus) preceded the initial detection of cases by several weeks. Some of the suspected positive samples were detected even earlier than the first case in Wuhan.” The Western politicians and media outlets denigrating④ the work of the team and the report on its findings are intent on making the research into the origins of the pandemic a political tool to serve their purpose of impugning⑤ the integrity of the Chinese authorities. Yet their efforts do not alter the fact that China has cooperated with global experts in an open, transparent way, nor will they dissuade⑥ it from continuing to cooperate to learn more about the origins of the virus so the world can be better prepared to prevent a pandemic in the future. Suez Canal resumes traffic

The traffic in Suez Canal resumed① after massive container ship② Ever Given has been successfully refloated③ as being stranded④ in the canal for almost a week, Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said on Monday. Leth Agencies, the SCA’s service provider, confirmed that the mega-ship is currently sailing north on its way to the Bitter Lakes in the canal. Mohab Mamish, Egypt’s President adviser for the Suez Canal projects and former SCA’s chairman, told state-TV that “traffic in the canal restarted today, and a group of the stranded ships is sailing.” “The canal is now completely open for traffic, as the Panama-flagged ship has moved,” Mamish said, adding the SCA will increase the number of the working hours to move the vessels⑤quickly. Taiwan’s worst train crash

A train crash in Taiwan killed at least 50 people and injured 160 others Friday, authorities said, in the deadliest railway accident in decades on the island. A construction truck that was improperly parked on a slope rolled down and collided① with the passenger train Friday morning, leaving it derailed② in a tunnel, according to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency (CNA). The train had 374 seats but was carrying almost 500 people, with many passengers standing in the crowded cars. The accident has raised concerns about Taiwan’s transportation safety.
