“More and more desperate measures”: Climate protesters target priceless artworks

Two climate activists threw mashed potatoes on a glass-covered painting by the celebrated French Impressionist Claude Monet on Sunday inside a German museum. Videos show the activists dousing① one of the artist’s works, “Grainstacks,” with a thick yellow substance that covered the painting’s warm red hues②. The activists, a man and a woman, each glued a hand to the wall by the painting. It is believed that they were associated with Last Generation, an advocacy group devoted to climate change issues. The museum said that the food did not cause any damage to the piece and the painting will be on display again by Wednesday. Another climate protester glued his head to “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” the famous painting by Johannes Vermeer that was on exhibit at a museum in The Hague on Thursday, the latest in a series of actions by activists that have targeted world-renowned paintings in recent months as the protesters have sought to draw attention to climate change. There have been at least three reported actions by climate activists targeting artworks this month, which took place in London, Germany and now in the Netherlands. ( The New York Times & France 24)

Henry Cavill confirms his return as Superman

Henry Cavill confirmed in an Oct. 24 social media post that he is returning as Superman in a new Warner Bros-DC movie following his cameo① at the end of “Black Adam.” The actor wrote to his fans, “I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman…Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.” Two days later, Cavill spoke publicly for the first time about his Superman return during a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast at 92NY in New York City. “The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope,” Cavill told the audience. “It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. "World's dirtiest man" dead at 94 "not long after" taking bath for first time in decades

Amou Haji died Sunday in the village of Dejgah, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). He had refused to bathe for more than 60 years, fearing it would make him sick. Villagers had recently pressured him to bathe, and “for the first time a few months ago, villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash,” the IRNA report stated, according to The Telegraph . “Not long after, he fell ill and finally, on Sunday … he gave up his life.” Amou Haji reportedly had no wife or family, but some villagers tried to look after him, including reportedly building him a cinder-block dwelling. “Emotional setbacks in his youth” reportedly kept him from bathing, according to villagers cited by The Guardian . He also allegedly① ate roadkill② and had been photographed smoking multiple cigarettes at once. (Fox News)

Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet is one of the largest in the world

coalition① government. (AP News) Rishi Sunak has continued the recent trend of having very large Cabinets, appointing 31 ministers to his top team. The new Prime Minister’s inner circle had to cram① around an extended table in Downing Street on Wednesday for their first meeting. In recent years, UK leaders have taken to creating more and more posts at the top of government as they look to reward allies. Mr Sunak also accommodated supporters of his predecessors, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, in a bid to② patch up party unity. It means Britain continues its trend of having unusually large Cabinets compared to other countries around the world. Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has just 19 members in his top team, while Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, makes do③ with only 17. In Japan, the size of the Cabinet is 20, and in Australia it is 23. Meanwhile, the US cabinet features 25 ministers and officials. Only Canada, led by Justin Trudeau, outstrips④ Britain with its massive ministerial team of 39. ( The Telegraph )

Elon Musk has taken control of Twitter and fired its top executives

Elon Musk has completed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, putting the world’s richest man in charge of one of the world’s most influential social media platforms. Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal and two other executives, according to two people familiar with the decision. Twitter declined to comment. By completing the deal, Musk and Twitter have avoided a trial that was originally set to take place earlier this month. Musk on Thursday also fired CFO Ned Segal and policy head Vijaya Gadde. Earlier last week, Musk visited Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters to meet with employees. He then tweeted a video of himself entering Twitter’s office carrying the bowl of a sink, writing, “Entering Twitter HQ—let that sink in①!” He also posted an open letter to Twitter advertisers, saying he doesn’t want the platform to become a “free-for-all-hellscape② where anything can be said with no consequences.” (CNN)

Karim Benzema was awarded the 2022 Ballon d’Or at a ceremony in Paris on Monday after a stellar① 2021-22 season saw him lead Real Madrid to a Champions League and LaLiga double. Benzema, 34, scored a career-best 27 times in LaLiga and was top scorer in the Champions League with 15 goals, including hat tricks against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. “I’m really proud seeing this prize, it’s been my dream since I was a kid. I grew up with this in my head, and after that I had the motivation,” Benzema said. “It’s been difficult for me and that just makes me stronger mentally. I’m really happy with my work.” The France international picked up the prize for the first time in his career at a ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
