01话题介绍
作为UKidSchool的教学主题,圣诞庆祝主题是英国冬季(11月、12月、1月、2月)最合适的话题。在冬天, 这是我们一年中最大的庆祝活动,那就是圣诞节!为什么圣诞节在我们的生活中如此重要?主要是在圣诞节期间,家人和朋友可以相聚在一起,对一些人来说,圣诞节意味着庆祝耶稣基督诞生的时期。
As a teaching topic for UKId school, the topic of Celebrations is a most appropriate one as the winter months (November, December, January, February) approach in Britain. During winter time, in the British calendar, our biggest celebration of the year occurs - that celebration is Christmas! Why is Christmas so significant in our lives? Primarily, the Christmas period is when family and friends can meet up and spend time together and, for some people, Christmas signifies a religious time where the birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated.
圣诞节在12月25日。还有另外一个叫做‘Boxing Day’的节日,也就是12月26日。圣诞节本身就是对耶稣诞生的纪念。圣诞节的传统让人想起了这样的纪念活动。圣诞节的传统包含圣诞大餐,以及互相赠送礼物(因为在圣经中有讲到,三位智者向耶稣赠送礼物)。有一些家庭会选择在午夜去教堂参加名为“午夜弥撒”之前交换礼物。
Christmas Day happens on 25th December and there is also another associated holiday called ‘Boxing Day’, which falls on 26th December. Christmas Day itself is a commemoration of the nativity of Jesus. The traditions of Christmas Day are reminiscent of such a commemoration - so, we feast (have a big meal) on the day and we give and receive presents (since, in the Bible, we are told that the Three Wise Men gave presents to Jesus). The exchanging of presents may happen on Christmas Eve, for some families, before they go to church at midnight to attend a service called Midnight Mass.

Other families swap their gifts on Christmas Day - many will do this before or after the Queen’s Speech where the Queen gives an annual message to the public of the UK and the Commonwealth. The broadcast from the Queen occurs at 3pm every year and has been a tradition since 1957 (where she gave her first live TV broadcast).

Boxing Day is a tradition dating back to the 1830s when postmen and servants received a ‘Christmas box’ which contained money or presents as thanks from employers for good service. Today, we usually visit family on Boxing Day and share food and drink with them.

Integral to our Celebrations topic is the study of Spring Festival. As teachers who respect and want to learn more about Chinese culture, we have researched and learned with great interest about the customs and traditions of this annual lunar festival. Through acknowledging the importance of Spring Festival in the Chinese calendar, we will teach children about the Chinese New Year celebrations and festivities that take place in Britain, which signify the positive impact that Chinese communities have in the UK in promoting diversity and cultural understanding.

Father Christmas, Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, Old Saint Nick这些都是圣诞老人的名字。他是一个传递快乐的人,全世界的孩子都知道他。
Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas, or Old Saint Nick has so many names! He is known to children throughout the world as the messenger of joy.

The Elves
精灵是圣诞老人最好的朋友——他或她在一年中最繁忙的圣诞节帮助圣诞老人。精灵们在圣诞老人的工作室里工作,他们制作玩具,打包圣诞老人的麻袋。
An elf is Santa’s best friend – he or she helps out at Christmas, the busiest time of year. Elves work in Santa’s workshop, they build toys and pack Santa’s sack.

Rudolph
the Red Nosed Reindeer

Reindeers carry Santa’s sleigh. Reindeers are loyal to Santa where they live in his village, in an arctic setting. All of Santa’s reindeer have individual names, including the most well-known of all, Rudolph.
03为什么这个话题值得学习?

This topic is worth learning because it’s all about excitement! Furthermore, teaching our students about Christmas allows for plentiful opportunities to teach about British culture and traditions. Whilst Christmas is a time when children receive presents, it’s also an occasion to give presents to others. So, through the theme of Celebrations, we can teach children about the joy of giving and being considerate of others. Increasingly, we can also teach students about being charitable since some people give up their time to work for charity or to look after those less fortunate than themselves.

Children are attracted by Christmas because it is perceived as a magical time, so in this sense, we can tap into the creative imaginations of our students, giving them a chance to create their own Christmas cards and crafts or bake their own Christmas treats. The lights, colour, decorations and Christmas displays excite the senses at this wonderful time of year. Through the explosion of sensations during the festive season, and the associated fun, we can teach children to appreciate their good fortune.

In this week, we teach students about the many guises that Father Christmas has taken across the centuries and put the celebration of Christmas into a historical context. We also teach children about how they feature into the story of Christmas as well as about the religious meaning of Christmas time and advent.

SANTA’S WORKSHOP

We talk about the significance of reindeer in the Christmas story and we could not teach about reindeer without paying homage to the most famous reindeer of all, Rudolph. In this week’s teaching, we reference Finland where reindeer make their habitat, and the nutritional intake of reindeer.

CHRISTMAS DECORATION

The Christmas season is resplendent with iconography – we discuss the decorations that adorn people’s homes and public spaces as well as the ritual of decorating a Christmas tree. We also instruct students about advent, a time for the preparation of the celebration of Jesus’ birth.

In our Spring Festival week, we pay tribute to the biggest celebration in the Chinese calendar. We tell our students about what we as British people understand about this annual festival and the influence that Chinese culture has had in the UK.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the food and drink! In this section of our teaching, we educate our students about the traditional foods, desserts and beverages that we consume at this special time of year.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without giving presents and cards either! These annual rituals are taught, while we add an extra dimension through teaching children about how they can make their own Christmas cards.

The majority of people in the UK who have been through the British school system will have experienced what it is to watch, or star in, a nativity play. Therefore, we teach the story of the nativity and about the process of preparing for, and putting on, a nativity play in a school.

Charles Dickens (arguably the greatest British novelist of the Victorian era) wrote a ‘Christmas Carol’. The story’s message – the importance of charity and goodwill towards humankind – struck a powerful chord with the British public and showed members of Victorian society the benefits of celebrating the holiday. The primary benefit of the celebration, Dickens told us, was to appreciate what we have and to make the most of the time we have with friends and family. Dickens’ character, Scrooge, warns us of the unhappiness that results from being bitter and cruel. For Dickens to have written such a text shows us to what extent Christmas, and its associated festivities, are significant for British people.

Celebratory activities bind us to our heritage – this is one of the key reasons we have also planned to incorporate Spring Festival as a theme of our teaching. When we teach children about both Christmas and Spring Festival, we can relay the message of remembering our own heritage but also to welcome and explore others’ traditions and cultures. Our principal reason to teach this topic is to spread the word of ‘goodwill to all (wo)men’, and to emphasize the point that whilst there exist differences in our backgrounds, there are yet many more points of common ground to be shared across countries and cultures.
