这里的so … that … 句型省略了that，表示“如此……以至于……”
例如：She spoke so quietly (that) I could hardly hear her.
她说话轻得我几乎听不见。
表示“如此……以至于……” 还可以用 so … as to …
例如：He was so angry that he could not speak. = He was so angry as not to be able to speak.
So后接形容词或副词位于句首时，其后用部分倒装：例如：So cold was the weather that we had to stay at home.天气太冷，我们只好呆在家里。

下面几句意思相仿：
He was so angry as not to be able to speak.
He was so angry that he could not speak.
He was angry, so he could not speak.
He was angry, and so he could not speak.
下面几点该注意：
（1）第一句里的 so angry as not to...可以改作 angry enough not to ...，但不可说so angry enough as to...或 angry enough as to...。
（2）第二句里的 that 有时省去。
（3）第三句里的 so 的前面有人以为该用分号而不用逗号，否则该加上 and（成为第四句）。
（4）第四句里的 and so 的前面用逗号，不用分号。
