Pleasant melody floats along fragrant andantique alleys. This is the life typical of a recluse seeking his retreat inbusy streets. The afternoon when I arrived in Chengdu for a visit to Taoist priest Luoxin,it seemed as if I had passed through a bustling metropolis to another tranquilworld. The primitive and unique Wudou Temple nestles among thedowntown area. As ancient people regarded it as the greatest courtesy toreceive guests by washing hands, burning incense and playing guqin, Taoistpriest Luoxin implicitly conveyed his hospitality to me, singing in a soft toneaccompanied by playing guqin himself. While sipping the tea, I was lucky enoughto discuss Tao with priest Luoxin at a close range, listening to his preachingexperience and grand ideals.

Practicing Martial Arts before Becoming a Taoist, with Two Turning Points
Originally called Zou Huixin, Taoist priestLuoxin was born in a family well-known for martial arts over generations, inparticular, his grandfather was a master-hand of Chinwoo Association in Shanghai. He has beenpracticing martial arts since his childhood. Currently, he is a sixth-level Karateplayer, the highest level inChinaso far. He has on several occasions traveled eastward to Japan to explore thesupreme realm for Karate and also covered all the way toThailandtotemper the gist of Thai boxing. He used to serve as martial arts instructor forChengdu Qingyang (District) Antiriot Police Group, Tibet Military Command andBeijing Security Forces.
Taoist priest Luoxin had plunged himselfinto martial arts in his early years and achieved some success, but Tao TeChing he repeatedly recited during teenage lingered in his mind from timeto time. In fact, Taoist priest Luoxin had revealed exceptional gift for Taoismin his youth: he began to develop a yearning for Chinese Taoism when perceivingthrough meditation great ancient wisdom of the Chinese nation. Having experiencedtwo major turning points in his life, he started his journey in practicingTaoism.
The first time he felt touched was in 1997when he was delivering a speech on invitation in Sichuan University. As hundred of students applauded in the hall, it suddenly occurred to him thatboxing can only affect a small area while spirit can be spread across theworld. The second turning point came when he was engaging in a long talk withGong Pengcheng, a Sinology master fromTaiwan. They pledged each other bymixing blood in the wine. “I would cherish those who understand me, and respectthose who choose me”—it’s the words from the depth of his heart. For him, Gong Pengchengis just like a door, which, once opened, leads him to another new world. Withthe recommendation of Gong Pengcheng, he went toTaiwanto learn geomancy astrologyand Celestial Master’s incantations, and started his career in following andpromoting Taoism.
“Hidden under the foliage, the flowers, though in a feeble state, will not wither for a long time”. For priest Luoxin, the transition didn’t come by chance but by fate. A talent will finally meet hisscout. Cherishing ambitions, he is bound to go even farther.

Becoming a Master’s Disciple to Carry ForwardZhengyi Sect
For the Chinese people, their lifephilosophy simply takes Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as their theoreticalsources. Confucianism advocates preserving one’s conscience and nurturing one’stemperament, Buddhism preaches illuminating one’s conscience to see one’s temperamentand Taoism upholds refining one’s conscience and temperingone’s temperament. The three religions invariably lay their emphasis onconscience. After decades of study on the classics of these three religions, hefinally took his roots in Taoism.
In 2012, Taoist priest Luoxin officiallyacknowledged Zhang Jiyu as his master, who is vice president of “Chinese TaoistAssociation” and became the 66th legitimate successor to Zhengyisect of Chinese Taoism. In 2013, Taoist priest Luoxin was awarded the officialdocument in Mount Longhu, ancestral chamberfor Chinese Taoism and became a genuine Taoist of the Zhengyi sect. During thesame year, he rebuilt “Wudou Taoist temple” in Mt. Wawuand founded the “Youwei Tao”. Since then, strictly following the tenet of “returningto the root and seeking mental tranquility” and “rectifying oneself toinfluence others”, he has been unremittingly practicing hard, and diligentlyand tirelessly seeking to inherit and spread true essence of Taoism.
As one of the two major sects of ChineseTaoism in the later period, Zhengyi sect is originated from Celestial MasterTao during the late Han dynasty. Ancestral master Zhang Daoling was thefounder. Till now, the most representative figure for the Celestial Master Taomust be “Zhang Jiyu, the 65th grandson of Zhang Daoling”, who is worshipedby Taoists across Taiwan Strait. As the 66th legitimate successor ofZhengyi sect, Taoist priest Luoxin never slackens his efforts in studyingdoctrines of Taoism. In 2012, he traveled to “Chinese Taoist Association” inTaiwanto learn about geomancy and astrology; in2014, he once again went toTaiwanto learn Celestial Masters’ incantations, becoming the only one across theStrait who has learned Celestial Masters’ incantations among Taoist priests ofa non-Celestial Master school. Taoist priest Luoxin not only regards Zhang Jiyuas his instructor for imparting “doctrines of Taoist”, but aims to spreadTaoism all over the world in the footsteps of his master.

Concentrating on Practicing Taoism with WudouTaoist temple as His Base
Among many titles of Taoist priest Luoxin, “Priestof Wudou Taoist temple” undoubtedly holds an important place. According torecords in the Taoist Sutra, Wudou Taoist temple was founded around A.D.58-76 during Eastern Han Dynasty. Zhang Ling, founder of Taoism, establishedthe Wudoumi religion, built the Taoist temple and practiced Taoism here, andfinally become an immortal. Located in Hongya County,Wudou Taoist temple is located close to a river at the foot of hills amidcurling mists. It makes sense why ancient sages chose this place to practiceTaoism and become immortals. It may be said that after going through over twothousand years of rise and fall, Wudou Taoist temple has become an epitome ofhistory.
For Taoist priest Luoxin, the first thingin promoting Taoism is to keep a foothold in Wudou Taoist temple. During thetwo years following handover/takeover, Wudou Taoist temple has been put under continuousrenovation and reconstruction. This August, it will be open to believers whowould like to settle and practice Taoism here. “Only by completing thefundamental construction, can we move on and promote Taoism at home and evenabroad”, said Taoist priest Luoxin, “there are too many things to accomplish, but we can only do them one by one. Only when we have firmly taken each stepcan we turn our grand visions into reality one day”.
Furthermore, each year, Taoist priestLuoxin would go deep into maintains to practice Taoism for ninety days, or halfa year, or even a whole year. When practicing Taoism in the mountains, he wouldpractice “Sacred Solar Needle” in the morning, and practice boxing in his sparetime; at nights, he would sit in meditation or play guqin under the moonlight. All creatures have their spirits. While shutting himself off, Taoist priestLuoxin likes to “communicate” with animals to better appreciate Taoistphilosophy. He would return to Mother Nature, getting up at sunrise and havinga rest at sunset; he would take simple foods, seclude himself from the outerworld and concentrate on practicing Taoism. Each time he returns from hisseclusion, he would experience a spiritual enhancement and even energymultiplication.

Tao Is beside us; the Greatest Truths Arethe Simplest
As Lu Xun once put it, “China’sfundamentals all lie in Taoism”. Such saying has its deep implications. TheTaoist culture is vast, profound and tremendously abstruse. As the priest of WudouTaoist temple in Hongya County, Taoist priestLuoxin believes that Taoism has three realms: Youwei(doing something), Wuwei (doing nothing), and Weisuoerbuwei (Nothing is left undone).
As a traditional and indigenous religion inChina,Taoism is increasingly “demonized” over the recent years. Due to inadequatepublicity, Taoism is also shrouded in an envelope of “mystery”. Taoist priestLuoxin has always been seeking to make Taoism more acceptable to ordinarypeople in their daily lives. In his eyes, Taoism is not to deliberately mystifyothers by sitting high up in the chamber and clinging stubbornly to oldbeliefs, but to keep pace with times and “go to the public”. Moreover, on thebasis of Celestial Master Zhang Jiyu, vice president of “Chinese TaoismAssociation”, Taoist priest Luoxin brings up with “Youwei Tao” and divides it intothree levels: Youwei (doing something),Wuwei (doing nothing), and Weisuoerbuwei (Nothing is left undone).
Most modern people have their minds muffledby interests in an age of extravagance and waste and forget what Tao on earthis about. Taoist priest Luoxin thinks that Tao is like air, existing amongeveryone’s breaths. People won’t realize the importance of air till they aresuffocating. Through all ages, Buddhism preaches about “kindness”, Confucianismabout “harmony”, and Taoism advocates “oneness”. “Nature and Man in One” is thehighest realm pursued by Taoism. MasterNan Huai-Chin once gave an apt metaphor: “Buddhism is a grocery store,Confucianism a grain store, while Taoism is a pharmacy”.
In combination of teaism, Taoist priestLuoxin has also perceived the “way of putting down”. According to Chinese teaceremony, the first sip is to taste, the second is to recollect the taste, andthe third is to savor the tea. Once finished, you should put the cup down. Oneis so prone to get annoyed because he cannot leave these concerns behind. Infast-paced modern life, meditation is the simplest yet most complicated lifegoal sought after by urbanites. One has to live a simple life, rather than acomplicated one. This is also what Taoist priest Luoxin wishes to convey, thecore idea of Laozi--“The greatest truths are thesimplest”.

Visiting All Imperial Mausoleums, ExploringMyth of Geomancy
As an indigenous religion inChina, Taoismis closely associated with geomancy. This is because they share the samegenerating background and ideological foundation. The Book of Changes isa powerful bond between them. In particular, Taoist rites, incantations andspells are all prevalent in geomancy. Geomancy in Taoism refers to the theoryabout understanding natural environments and transforming nature based oncautious investigations, and winning optimum state in which climatic, geographic and humanity conditions achieve harmony, so as to reach a state of “Natureand Man in One”, the supreme realm sought after by Taoism.
Taoist priest Luoxin has not only traveleda long distance toTaiwantolearn about Celestial Masters’ incantations and geomancy; but also visited almostall imperial mausoleums inChinato understand geomancy in different regions ofChina. Just as a fine bird or beastchooses its own nest or lair, a talented man will choose a proper place tosettle. Taoist priest Luoxin claims that geomancy is not an act of superstitionbut an act of science. When studying the geomancy of imperial mausoleums, he wouldput down encompass, survey everything from orientation to soil texture. Thus hegains a perception that “geomancy of ancestral tombs is related to the weal andwoe of later generations. Therefore, particular attention must be paid toselection of burial place. Geomancy has close associations with social statusor wealth of a person or a family.”
However, the internet, books andperiodicals have too many reports on geomancy. Taoist priest Luoxin givesanother interpretation to the concept of geomancy from his distinctiveperspective: Nothing can be grown with pure yang and nothing can be born frompure yin; a human being is a combination of yin and yang, with the man beingyang and the woman being yin; hence there are families. When surveyinggeomancy, Taoist priest Luoxin will first observe the wife and then thehusband. Only people with “blessings” can enjoy a place of first-classgeomancy. That’s exactly the meaning of the folk saying, “blessed people willdwell in blessed places”. To survey the geomancy of a building, one has toanalyze based on its surroundings, rather than making any judgment at liberty. The highest realm in Taoism is that the greatest way is beyond perception. Areal master-hand seeks transcending all boundaries. Therefore, Taoist priestLuoxin has been concentrating on the science of geomancy and he will neverstop.

The Right Way Prevails, Spreading Taoism All overthe World
Reading ten thousand volumes of books isnot as good as traveling ten thousand li. Likewise, to spread Taoist cultureand its essence to the world, only the right way can prevail. Taoist priestLuoxin wishes not only to preach Taoism inChina, but to promote Wudou Taoist temple beyondChina. It is a long and arduousjourney that involves many difficulties. However, the Taoism embraced by WudouTaoist temple is already on its way to reach overseas. At present, YouweiTaoism International Charity Foundation has been set up in Melbourne, and at the next step, a WudouTaoist temple will be built there.
Taoist priest Luoxin hopes that westernerswho “are bent on Taoism” will be able to learn about Chinese Taoist culturethrough Wudou Taoist temple. Besides, they can also learn about Chinese culturefrom regimen, medical skill, boxing, guqin and some other aspects. “Taoismbelongs to the whole world and the Taoist culture and its essence can be spreadto and shared with the world”, said Taoist priest Luoxin with a great longing.
“I am a terminator of difficulties”, Taoistpriest Luoxin describes himself in such words when chatting with me. The trialsand hardships over the past decades have never scared him away. The world is sohuge, and “the right way prevails” is not an empty talk, but requiresdown-to-earth fulfillment in phases and spreading Taoism all over the world. Toborrow a poem from Wang Anshi, “knowing that world affairs are but a dream Ithus seek nothing, with nothing to seek, my mind is all empty; when striving mybest to make achievement, only to find that all my fulfillment is but a dream”.Taoist priest Luoxin likes the last line best. He is bent on trying his best tomake achievement, spreading Taoism all over the world, and realizing his ownideals.
“When the right way prevails, there isnothing to be feared. Life is endless and Taoism will be carried on forever.”Finally, Taoist priest Luoxin summarizes himself with this remark.
结语
Conclusion
On June 15th, Taoist priest Luoxin will begin his annual practice againin a retreat. On the martial arts practicing field in Wudou Taoist temple,Luoxin Regimen Twelve-Step Boxing that integrates expiration, inspiration andstrength remains fresh in people’s memory. Unlike other stereotyped Taoists inour impression, Taoist priest Luoxin walks on the forefront of the times withother modern people. He firmly believes in his ideals, and travels in theearthly world, with his noteworthy conduct and independent character, endeavoringto spread Taoism all across the world. As a sage says, “My life is decided bymyself instead of the heaven”. Thinking over the song Living in the Presentby chanted Taoist priest Luoxin, I can better appreciate the line that “Livinga good present life is exactly the highest realm in one’s life”.
