Some school leavers travel or work for a period of time instead of going directly to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages for their studies?

Some high school graduates prefer to take a gap year to seek employment or go traveling rather than immediately entering higher education. This essay shall explore both the benefits and drawbacks for their study if they pursue having this break.
One of the main benefits of taking a gap year between high school and matriculating into university is the experiences a future student can receive. This is particularly true for one who chooses to work, especially if the job is within their chosen field of study. Even though the job itself may be basic, it can still give the potential student a foundation of job practicality, and this can only benefit the student. Likewise, traveling may also help the student become more apt at overcoming problems, teaching the young adult to be more independent, a life-skill that can help the high-school graduate to be more disciplined in their future studies.
On the other hand, taking time off before going on to college may result in the young person becoming distracted and, thus, unable to fully apply themselves to study. After traveling, the young person may become addicted to travel, and later, they may constantly yearn to be ‘on the road’ again. This restless feeling can seriously distract the student, as they may prefer instead to spend their time planning their next trip. Working, as well, may cause the student to become disincentivized to finish their study, due to already experiencing the rewards of working, namely, having an independent income, and as a result, might find themselves eager to return to the workforce.
In conclusion, taking time off prior to enrolling in university to work or travel can help the student gain experience, giving them both practical job skills and life-skills, which may be beneficial to their study; however, it may distract their focus, as they might prefer planning their next excursion, or it could cause them to lose interest in studying altogether.
