Food sector displays robust growth

Despite economic meltdown, the agriculture sector of Pakistan recorded a robust growth in the first quarter of 2023, driven by price increases and rebounding gross margins.
According to a JS Research report, the food sector continued to show robust performance during 1QCY23 as the topline expanded by 47% year-on-year.
The majority of the contribution came from four companies that were broadly milk producers – Nestle Pakistan, FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan, PREMA of At Tahour, and Fauji Foods – while other companies included a mix of confectionery, ready-made food items and other food segments.

The Trade Development Authority Pakistan (TDAP) seeks to improve the export of quality mangoes to increase its share in the global high-end market.
To this end, TDAP has initiated mango bagging under a pilot project in Pakistan’s two main mango-producing districts in Sindh and Punjab.It seeks to ensure uniformity in size, colour and fruit shape to have premium quality mango with cosmetic appeal.
TDAP has provided paper bags which were porous in nature. Owners of selected farms are supposed to use them to protect mangoes against insects and abrasion, thus preserving their cosmetic value. The bags serve as physical barriers for fruit flies as well.
These are one of the many social compliances and certifications needed for accessing formal high-end markets in the European Union, United Kingdom etc. In contrast, Pakistani mangoes mostly end up in Middle Eastern countries’ ethnic markets. The share of exports in total exports is less than six per cent, which could be enhanced, TDAP official says.

The removal of regulatory duty will significantly lower the prices of 1,800cc imported vehicles, All Pakistan Motors Dealer Association (APMDA) Chairman Haji Mohammad Shehzad said Saturday.
He appreciated the government's decision to remove the regulatory duty and expressed the hope that if the decision was implemented soon, there would be a significant reduction in vehicle prices in the upcoming months despite a possible increase in the dollar rate.
Shehzad said that due to the increase in the prices of cars, people had stopped buying them, which caused the industry to lose billions of dollars.For instance, Honda Atlas Cars Limited, which used to sell 50,000 vehicles a year could only sell 10,000 vehicles in 2023, he said.
The APMDA chairman suggested that if Pakistan manufactured vehicles instead of importing them, not only would prices come under control but the government could also collect revenue of around $1-1.5 billion annually.

Work on Karachi coastal zone to be expedited

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on Friday chaired a progress review meeting on the Karachi Coastal Comprehensive Development Zone and gave directive for setting up a committee to expedite work on the project.
The $3.1 billion project, located around western backwaters of Karachi Port and spread over 687 hectares, will result in the creation of an international business bay area, a hi-tech knowledge-economy sector, a hub for global young talents and entrepreneurs, and a showcase of the world-class waterfront lifestyle.
The scope of the project also includes the setting up of a new industrial city, external connecting roads, breakwaters and a coastal bridge, a cruise terminal, seawater desalination plants, and environmental improvement works.
